I don’t believe in corporate houses that spend 100 times the actual expense only to keep their luxuries at the expense of common man of India. NGOS could play a good level knowledge to be used for the development of the country and not for few. The country should totally grow. How can the PM of India say India is developing when majority of the Indians are crying for a square meal and the economic bosses sigh out after having a Taj meal. Let Goddess of India decide the punishment to them or the people of INDIA.

Given the percentage of the population still dependent on agriculture and the relatively small holding corporate agriculture does not seem the way forward. The farmer needs advice on the best crop practices, which he will take from a government agency and not a private agency. There are any number of collaborative efforts between NGOs and corporate. The challenge is in scaling up these efforts. The e-choupal initiative of ITC was touted to be the biggest game changer in agriculture in recent times. However even this initiative is limited to just 3 states and just 3 crops at that.

So far as NGOs are on their right track and fare enough in playing their role, there is no harm in shaking hands with them. Extension activity (Lab to land) is very much needed in Indian agriculture as of now and for that such synergetic relationship with NGO will surely give good mileage to corporates as well to NGOs.

Yes, I knew many of them from seed sector as well from pesticide sector who really runs their special mission to help farmers in term of knowledge development as well to improve their skill. Some of them are Excel, UPL, Dhanuka from Pesticide sector and Mahyco, Bejo Sheetal, Namdhari , Nuziveedu from seed sector.

Yes, I do agree with you that corporate houses should come forward and choose their NGOs to promote agriculture. I would go one step more in recommending corporate companies to go directly to the farmers and not to create another NGO as a middle man. If I see the sugarcane cultivation model in Tamil Nadu, it appeals me for their approach in having their field officers who directly approaches the farmer for technical assistant and harvest who are employed by the sugar factory management. The increase in productivity of the sugarcane, transfer of knowledge to the farmer from the research institutions and availability of agri loan at the same interest rate are the results of the direct approach to the farmers by the sugar factory - no middle man and the factory price reaches to the farmer directly. We have such examples in India. Our corporates should copy this model for other crops and create huge job opportunity for agri graduates.

Yes, that is needed, but the corporates must not have the tendency piggyback on NGOs to establish the chain and then bypass them.

I know of Pepsi Foods in Punjab, growing Basmati Rice they are also working with farmers for citrus juices, for Tropicana.

Definitely, since the corporate have the scale and strength that NGOs in the ground level don’t have but the latter is better attuned to the demands at the grass roots level and thus more effective in implementing operations.

We are in the process of getting corporates on board, following the Government’s initiative to have CSR mandatory spending up to 2%. We are thus looking to have corporates lend their CSR support to incubators be it in terms of funds and manpower and infrastructure resources. This will be another effective platform for PPP mode of operations in the sector.


Almost all the major agro-companies are out there helping the farmers; for example, ITC’s e-choupal, DCM Shriram’s Kisan Haryali etc.

I know ITC is doing some good work in North India- e-choupal. In South we have Akshaya Kalpa in Karnataka - helping in setting up dairy farms - organic milk.

What we can do is provide training to the farmers on the export requirements and help them to market their produce directly. This is already being done. However, some corporate houses continue to exploit the farmer. What needs to be done is to educate the farmer on the Government policies, activities of various Government Departments and modern farming technology. Farming is a very lucrative profession if modern technology is adopted.

ITC has e-choupal. Ballarpur Industries, Reliance Retail readily come to mind. However, there are a large number of other corporates who are working with farmers in various parts of the country and providing them with various inputs and buy back the produce.

Yes. Now Corporate need to share a percentages of their profit in Social works like building school, hospital, rural sector etc which is still at its nascent stage and need a real initiatives by corporate. They called it Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR).

Similarly it is high time for Govt.to raise a bill so that Corporates should help the agriculture sector with active participation with NGO and other organisation. In addition to that there should be a mandatory posting of Doctors and other professionals to be posted in rural sector for few years. Initiatives of Govt. should be mixing the corporate with agriculture sector regularly and continuous basis, so that the barrier between the two sectors minimises and agricultural sector can be benefitted from it.
As an agrarian country, we must give priority to agriculture sector not in words but in action also.

An NGO is usually a non-governmental organization (NGO) which is any non-profit or a voluntary citizens' group. Logically a corporate house or organization always seeks profits for their investments and efforts, compared to that NGO searches fund raiser or back up for their good cause with less or no profits. Until and less a Corporate is planning to improve their brand image it is a bit tricky for them to come forward. But I really appreciate if corporate houses come up and join for a moral cause because unlike government and UN a corporate is very strict about their efforts and investments, and they also keep a tight check on logical functioning and working of NGO’s initiatives. This increases efficiency of NGO with good funding, as sometimes government funding criteria is outdated compared to present market rates of equipment, tools and services required by NGO.

Corporate houses, even FDI are welcome as they bring in technology and funds together. However there is a lurking fear that common farmer will be displaced from his farm ownership. Hence government should permit corporates and FDI but have a good control with several restrictions. NGOs do a different job they are not profit making organizations hence can be of supportive role only

There are many companies say a few hundred in number. They are generally agro based companies who manufacture and export agro products like gherkins, seeds, baby corn, silver skin onion, baby corn, mango pulp, oil seeds/oil crops like palm oil etc., they generally supply seed and fertilizers, In animal husbandry sector the poultry breeders supply one day old chick and feed and buy back grown broiler or eggs produced. This is now well organized sector and Banks fund these companies for onward lending to farmers.
