Dear members,

I need help on cultivating melia dubia in my native village in erode district tamilnadu. We have nearly 10 acres of very dry land.

There is no source of water in most of the land, except for a 3 acre having little availability of water. The land is suitable for agriculture only during rain and people there used to cultivate some fodder crops for cattle.

Is it possible to cultivate melia dubia in such a land and if so what will be the approximate cost per acre and what type of maintanance is needed for the saplings? ( We are planning to fence the land totally and visit once or twice in a week. Will that be ok?)

Kindly help us on this and if melia dubia is not possible, what are the other options, preferably long term crop without water, since the land is not being used for any purpose now, but it has good red soil.

Thanks

hello Sir
Melia dubia grow well in Tamilnadu. but in initail 1-1and half year it needs care like any other tree.
it is the fastest growing tree and 400 trees can be planted in an acre that fetch 15-20 lakhs in 6-7years.

In its natural habitat the absolute maximum shade temperature varies from 37.5–47.5 C and the absolute minimum from 0–15 C.
The mean relative humidity in July 70–90% and January 50–80 %.

U pls contact the below expert in melia dubia

Thank you very much for the reply.
My concern is whether it can be grown without any source of water other than rain. only 3 acres have very little water(can be watered once in a week)

And if not, what can be the possible alternatives to be grown without water?

Thanks

Melia Dubia plant needs regular irrigation more than any nutrition or care. Since you do not have adequate water source DO NOT venture into cultivation of Melia Dubia.
We can suggest some other remunerative crop /s if you provide more details on: Type of soil, Whether virgin land or cultivated earlier, Annual rain fall and the season.
