Dairy Farming

I am a retired Air Force officer and am thinking of starting a mechanised dairy farm near Chandigarh.
1. Firstly, is it a profitable venture or I will land up in sinking my hard earned money.
2. Considering the fat content, lactation cycle, adaptation to Indian climate, life span, quantity of milk, ease of maintenance, resale value etc. Is it better to keep Murrah buffalows, Jersy cows or HF cows.
3. Is there any proffessional consultant available up north who can help in setting up a dairy farm.

DAiry faming is a profitable venture but depends on the maintainence of the cows and buffaloes. Yes, you can go in for murrah, jersey and HF cows. Visit a nearby dairy to get practical information and alos visit the depatment of dairy science of NDDB for details on consultancy in your state\

Dear Mr BS Nagra,

Dairy farming is a profitable business if entered into and managed professionaly and scientifically. As this business is based on live stock, risks are there. I suggest instead of going mechanically start with two animals. If you have agriculture land, I also suggest go for vegetable farming which will prove more beneficial. Even you can think of growing foreign vegetables required by five star hotels.
