Why chop CO4 fodder ?

Is it imperative to chop fodder, especially CO4 ?
What is the advantage of chopping fodder ?
Do the long leaves result in any injury to goats and sheep , due to sharp blades ?

I have tried feeding animals without cutting fodder and they seem to be eating...which makes me think is it worth chopping it ..
Suggestions would be appreciated.

The chopped fodder becomes more digestible and makes it easier for animals to swallow.
