The two species of exotic worms are available in India for vermicomposting i.e.
(i) African or tropical:Eudrilus eugeniae;which is suitable for warmer areas where temperatures go above 35 C
(ii) European or temperate: Eisenia foetida; suitable for cold regions experiencing subfreezing temperatures i.e. -20 C to +35C or even lower temperatures

These worms are very efficient and can convert organic garbage into agricultural black gold within 50-60 days in summer and in 90 days in winter. I have imparted extensive trainings on vermitechnology in difficult to reach and remote ares in Himachal Pradesh. Vermicompost has a great potential in improving soil properties and crop productivity.
