Hello,
We have a 2.5 acre coconut grove in Pollachi. We would like to know if we can start an open vermicomposting unit in the areas between the trees. Experienced agriculturalists please help us. We would also like to know the business potential for vermicompost and if there are buyers for it?

mr, suhas, vermicomposting in open field between the trees for commertial production is not advisable. for your farm use it is ok.vermi beds requires shelter for direct sun light and direct rain. vermi beds requires moisture.direct sun light avoparates moisture. worms not tolarate heat. in rains exess moisture in vermi beds. worms migrate from vermibeds to out side. birds pick the worms and eat and ants kill the worms. without worms or less worms you will not get regular compost. you should make shelter for rain and sunlight between the trees it is ok. open field is not advisable. first you use in your farm regularly it will increase your coconut yeald and quality.then you go for naibour farmers for sale the compost. for more details contact ananyaagrotech@yahoo.co.in

Hi sahas,

You should avoid having the Vermicompost or Compost unit in the coconut grove. The reason is very simple. The Coconut trees will be hit hard by the Rhinoceros Beetle as Compost or Vermicompost is the staging area for these beetles.

You can search the same in "The Hindu" if you want more details.
