Installing Raingun System for sugarcane estate of about 2000 acre
To get better experience in proper design and operating, we suggest that to first develop two plots of 10 acres each with portable pipe system to start with. Each plot can have a portable main line of about 3" dia running through its centre which gets connected to portable laterals with raingun on both side. The distance between the raingun positions on mainline and laterals can be from 100 to 120 ft.
The main and laterals portable pipes & fittings for 10 acres portable system installation are generally of HDPE sprinkler portable pipes with quick-fit couplers( 4 kg/cm2 pressur rating) and other quick-fit accessories like pump connecting nipple, Tees, Bend and End plugs etc. It can also be underground mainline of PVC with outlets at every 120ft and portable HDPE sprinkler pipes.
For covering 10 Acres area under portable raingun irrigation system (by shifting both main and lateral pipes) one can use one Vedant-SKIPPER model raingun (operating pressure 3 kg/cm2)with one stand by Raingun to save on shifting time. It is possible to apply about 1.5" rain every 8 days cycle or 2" rain every 12 days cycle with this system. One Raingun to be placed at one position for about 2.5 to 4 hours to give about 1.5" to 2" Rain ( depending on weather, soil type & height of the sugarcane) with shifting distance of every 100 x 120ft (mains/laterals). You may require a 7.5 HP high head pumpset (300 to 350 Lit/min discharge at about 130ft head) to run the Raingun sprinkler.
The Vedant-Skipper model is turbine drive and hence offer better resistance to wind distortions. We hope that 4 Kg/cm2 pressure rating x 75mm dia HDPE sprinkler pipes of 6 mts length with quick couplings are available.
With experience gain on this, the fixed or permanent installation can be properly planned dividing the plantation area in to 20 to 25 acres block each with its own water tank with booster pumpset & a sprinkler set . One can then design a permanent system wherein both main and laterals are of underground PVC pipes with controlled outlets at desired points for use with the raingun. Alternatively hose reel irrigators are also available , but the system cost is comparatively high though labour requirement is minimized.
