Need For Poultry Housing
The Chicken as a wild jungle fowl, sought safety and rest on the high limbs of tree or in the thick underbush. The jungle served for protection against the hot sunlight. Nature's object, with poultry is to cause the hen to reproduce herself and to maintain the race to which she belongs on the basis of survival of the fittest. On such natural conditions of wild state they lay very few eggs, and these only in the spring of the year.
But under modern conditions the hen is required to lay many eggs throughout the year, and this object can best be achieved if a comfortable shed is provided for them. So, in conclusion we can say that poultry is housed for comfort, protection, efficient production and convenience of the poultry man.
Essential of Good Housing
Comfort : The best egg production is secured from birds that are comfortable and happy. to be comfortable a house must provide adequate accommodation; be reasonably cool in summer, free from drafts and sufficiently warm during the winter; provide adequate supply of fresh air and sunshine; and remain always dry. Given these the hen responds excellently.
Protection : Includes safeguards against theft and attack from natural enemies of the birds such as the fox, dog, cat, kite, crow, snake, etc. The birds also should be protected against external parasites like ticks, lice and mites.
Convenience : The house should be located at a convenient place, and the equipment so arranged as to allow cleaning and other necessary operations as required.
