Sir,

I am from Tamil nadu. I have wasteland and thinking of tree plantation. It is a small hill station. Water supply is not much. Kindly advise regarding the type of trees to be planted. I need a regular income once 2 or 3 years.
Also let me know if there are schemes with subsidy for tree plantation. If so, Kindly let me know the contact address, please.
Thanking you.
With best regards,
Muthukumar.

Dear Muthukumar,

If you are planning to plant trees in your land with 2 to 3 years then you can go in for casuarina (sovaku ) or eucalyptus . These trees are used in the paper industry and they give you good clones to plant and also have a buy back arrangement from you.

You can also think of Neem , Silk Cotton , Melia dubia .

First identify the tree that will suit your soil and climatic conditions and then go ahead.

Sir,
Thank you very much for your kind reply. We shall follow your suggestion. We shall be grateful you could tell if there is subsidy for development of barren land in hill area. Also about loans with low interest rates.
Thanks,
Muthukumar

Dear Muthukumar,

The Subsidy for the development of land in hill area vary from place to place. Get in touch with a govt horticulture office in your relevant area to know if there is any subsidy for crops or trees.

As far as loans is concerned all nationalized banks offer loan if you are willing to pledge your document as security for the loan amount. The interest for crop loan is 7% . Development loans vary from 12% to 15%.

However if you have a agricultural co-operative bank in your area than they will provide you with 0% interest for the loan renewable every year. The max amount of loan under this scheme is 2,00,000/- only.

If you are new to agriculture then my sincere advice to you is not to invest large amounts upfront but to go at a steady pace so that loan repayment money does not become a burden to you.

All the best.
