Subject: ICAR sponsored Training Course on “Effect of climate change on water productivity: Coping strategies and management ” from August 18-31, 2009 at CRIDA Hyderabad – nominations for participation – reg..

As you are kindly aware, Rainfed farming which is the main stay of over 800 million farmers is influenced by monsoon vagaries, and high climatic variability affecting crop growth and yields adversely leading to vulnerability of rainfed farmers’ livelihoods. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) points out that the greatest vulnerability to climate change will be in unmanaged or unsustainably managed water systems . It is in this context that we are organizing the above training programme from August 18-31, 2009 at this institute to create awareness among the field functionaries about the profound changes likely to occur in rainfed farming, water resources availability and productivity, farmers socio-economic conditions and the coping mechanisms to be adapted by the farmers in order to meet the inevitable challenges due to climate change. The training programme also covers scientific, technical and socio- economic aspects relevant for the understanding of climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. The total number of participants will be limited to around 25. You are therefore requested to kindly send nominations through proper channel at the earliest in the prescribed format (copy enclosed) to Dr.M.V.Padmanabhan, Head, TOT of this Institute by July 22, 2009. The acceptance of the nominations will be communicated by end of July2009 . Boarding and lodging facilities will be provided free of cost to the selectedparticipants from the budget available for the purpose. Besides, TA for to and fro journey on actual basis as per their entitlement restricted to train (AC III tier / bus fare) will be reimbursed by CRIDA on production of relevant receipt/tickets for to and fro journeys. This Institute is located at a distance of 8, 12 and 20 km from Hyderabad and Secunderabad Railway Stations and Airport, respectively at Santoshnagar, near I.S. Sadan on Nagarjuna Sagar Road, Hyderabad – 500 059.
