Brief note on Tamil Nadu
Geographical information: Tamil Nadu is located between 805’ and 3005’ of North latitude and 76015’and 18020’ East Latitude. It is bound on the North and West by the State boundaries of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala respectively. In the South the Indian Ocean and in the East the Bay of Bengal forms the boundaries. Tamil Nadu has coastal lines of 990 km and a boundary of 1200 kilometers.
The climate is mostly hot and dry in the plains, the coolest month being January. April, May and June are the hottest months with a maximum temperature touching 450C. The annual rainfall varies from 600mm in the inland to 1250mm in the coast. The hilly regions in the West receive about 2000mm to 3000mm. The main rivers flowing through the state are the Cauvery, the Pennayar and Vaigai.
The forest area in Tamil Nadu is 22,871 sq km, which is about 17.6% of the total Geographical Area of Tamil Nadu and 3% of the country’s forest area. The state forest area blessed with diverse eco systems like Evergreen forest, Tropical dry ever green forest, Shoals, Grasslands, Moist deciduous forest, Dry deciduous forest, Thorn forest , Wet lands, Littoral forest, Mangroves and the Marine ecosystem.
INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY OF TEAK IN TAMIL NADU: Indian region is considered to be the only known center of genetic diversity and variability of teak with a distribution of over 8-9 million hectare. Teak in Tamil Nadu is confined to lower scopes of Nilgiris and Coimbatore ,Madurai ,Kanya kumari, and Tirunelveli districts.
Several attempts were made to raise Teak plantations earlier Mudumalai Forests of Gudalur division between 1863 and 1875.
ACTIVITIES IN TREE IMPROVEMENT : Tamil Nadu Forest Department having 63 research Centres and 6 modern nurseries .The performance of teak have been evaluated in the varies research centres which are located in the seven agro climatic zones of the state. In the state 73 candidates plus trees of Teak were selected from different localities. Research in teak on the seed production collection, cleaning, handling, storing, , and viability are being carried out by the DCF(genetics),Coimbatore
RESEARCH: The Tamil Nadu Forest Department Research wing concentrated on short rotation teak through intensive genetic combing, Teak clones for various forest types and degraded sites have been identified and developed.
Teak constitutes an important species planted in various programmes to meet the timber requirement of the local people under production forestry .It is grown in forest lands, community lands ,canal bunds and also in private lands
The Tamil Nadu Forest Department stated that the rate of clonal plants is exhibiting twice the rate of growth and biomass, when compared to the local Teak.
AS PER PREVIOUS REPORTS SUBMITTED BY AUTHORITIES CONCERNED,
SO FAR THE TAMIL NADU FOREST DEPATRTMRENT HAS NOT STANDARDISED PROTOCOL FOR TEAK TISSUE CULTURE.

Other than water logging soils are suitable for teak
For block plantation ideal spacing is 10 feet * 10 feet.whereas in border plantation spacing is 6 feet in between two plants. Pit size is 45 cm dia and 45 cm depth.
Farm yard manure or vermi compost is the best nutrient while planting time 2 kg for each pit.
Drip irrigation is suitable for teak.In case of manual watering ,it should be done based on plant age. For 1 month old plant (up to 1 month) - daily watering, for 4 months old plant - once for every 4 days and for 8 months old plant - once for every 10 days
