I have a couple of agriculture land in Tamil Nadu and would like to plant Teak there. Is there any legal problems to grow teak in India? If so is there any limitation in growing so? There is a scarcity of water. I can water plants for two or three days initially. Is it OK for Teak? I heard Teak will grow even without water. Kindly clarify. If not teak then which is an advisable tree to grow for atleast 8 to 10 years on an investment basis as well as which will serve nature.

Dear sir,
absolutely no legal complications to cultivate teak u can go head intially all plants reqire water, after two summers means no problem. u can improve water holding capacity of plants by cultural practiceing
1.mulching.
2.dig half moon shape trench so it holds water and helps in infiltration
3.drip irrigation

Hi Rajesh,

Growing Teak in Tamilnadu is not a problem.
Teak does not need much water and can withstand drought stress. The quality of teak however improves if you can irrigate the tree. Teak is a long duration crop and needs at least 20 + years for it to mature and have good commercial value. There are people who clam that Tissue Culture teak matures faster but i am not aware of it.Do your research on this.

If you want shorter duration trees than you can go for Caseurina, Mela dubai, silver oak or even bamboo for that matter.
is also advisable for you to split your plantation with different trees to spread you risks.
