With over 60 years’ development, China’s pesticide industry has been witnessing fast and sound development. Nowadays, China is not only the pesticide producer for guaranteeing its own agricultural production, but also an important pesticide exporter to other countries.
China’s pesticide output continuously increases in the last decade, with CAGR (2001-2009) of XX%. China’s pesticide output reaches XX million tonnes in 2009, up XX% year on year. The output value in China hit about USDXX billion (RMBXX billion), up XX% year on year.
Meanwhile, China is also a big pesticide consumer in the world. As one of the biggest agricultural countries in the world, China maintains its crop area of about 150 million hectares including grain planting area of over XX million hectares each year, which becomes the rigid support for huge domestic pesticide demand. Its total pesticide demand has been over XX tonnes (counted by 100% A.I.) each year, attracting more and more producers entering China’s pesticide market.
However, there are many problems of China’s pesticide industry, such as overcapacity for most pesticide varieties due to blind capacity expansion without proper management from related departments, too many small manufacturers with inefficient production technologies, few companies with international competitiveness due to capital shortage, little well-known brand, still serious pollution problems of discharge, etc.
Other factors such as global economic crisis, increased RMB appreciation, etc. are greatly influencing the development of China’s pesticide industry currently. The period of overall industrial reconstruction has arrived for China’s pesticide industry.
Chinese government now is actively raising the overall industrial strength for domestic pesticide industry by means of releasing stricter policies for environmental protection, heightening entrance threshold, phasing out high toxic and high residue pesticide varieties, canceling/regulate down tax export rebate rate, etc.
Two industrial policies, namely “Pesticide Industry Policy” and “Pesticide Production Entrance Conditions”, are to be soon released to accelerate China’s pesticide industrial restructure. Many producers with little competitiveness will be bankrupt or merged, and the existing high toxic pesticides will also be phased out, which will greatly change current production structure in the near future, however, meanwhile, it will also create enormous commercial opportunities.
Traditional pesticide varieties like glyphosate, mancozeb, etc. account for the largest proportion of XX% of the total in China’s pesticide products. Uncomplicated production technologies, mature production processes, maintainable market demand and raw material supply, easier registration approval are the major reasons for such a large proportion of traditional pesticides in China. However, most traditional pesticide varieties show overcapacity currently.
