Stevia is an incredibly sweet herb, obtained by a natural selective breeding process of the sweetest Stevia parent plants. The sweetener, stevioside, extracted from the plants, is 300 times sweeter than sugar. The fresh leaves have nice liquorices taste....
Originally Stevia only grew in the northern regions of South America but its cultivation has become popular worldwide. . The plant has been known for centuries by the native Guaranay-Indians for the sweet taste of its leaves. They use it, amongst other things, to make "mate" herbal tea. Stevia is often referred to as the "sweetest plant of the world".
It is clear from research of ten years of Hahnemann Charitable Mission Society that “Stevia Herb” controls diabetes when daily used by diabetes patient. And it permanently removes of the disease.
CULTIVATION METHOD OF STEVIA
Originally, Stevia only grew in the northern regions of South America but its cultivation has now become popular worldwide. Incredibly sweet herb, obtained from a natural selective breeding process of the sweetest Stevia parent plants.
1.LAND PREPARATION & CLIMATE: - The land sites plowed and cultivated twice to prepare a smooth, firm-planting surface.
2.TRANSPLANTS: - Transplants from cutting would be superior, however cost makes it prohibitive. Stevia must be propagated from seed in plug trays placed in a greenhouse for a period of 7 to 8 weeks.
3.PROPAGATION: - Stevia plants can be propagating from cutting or seeds or by tissue culture. As the seed germination is poor and seedlings grow slowly, it is generally propagated clonally through cuttings. For vegetative propagation, stem cuttings of 15 cm length is taken from leaf axils from the current year’s growth to give better results. Treatment with Paclobutrazol @ 100ppm is done to induce the root initiation in short time and IBA@500 ppm has also been found to be effective. The best months for propagation are February-March. The cuttings will be ready for transplanting after 25-30 days of rooting.
4.IRRIGATION: - Normally, the Stevia plant requires frequent, shallow irrigation. Generally, one applies irrigation if the stem tips are drooping, at least one time per week
5.WEED CONTROL: - This crop also requires hand hoeing and weeding
6.PESTS: - Insect or pest pressures other than cutworm are minimal. Septoria disease can cause considerable damage to the Stevia crop. It can be remove by 6% borax powder
7.HARVESTING; - After 3 months of propagation, stevia is ready for harvesting. Its harvest up from 7-8 centimeter, so that it can be regrowth. After that again after 90 days stevia is ready for harvest. Thus, it can be harvested 4 times in one year.
8.THRESHING: - Immediately after drying, a specially designed thresher/separator is necessary to separate dry Stevia leaves from its stem. Stem and leaf proportion tend to be equal such as 3,000 kg/ha each
Stevia and other medicinal & horticulture cultivation will be the milestone for the country’s development.
