Starting a new cow farm

Hi. I am about to start a new cow (Dairy) farm. I want to start with about 10 to 15 milking cows. I will not take care of them myself but I will hire an experienced family to live on the farm and take care of them. I just need to know what I should be aware of in areas such as diseases, nutrition, etc. Any details that I must be sure not to overlook.

thanks to all in advance

Hi
You giving time is very important, remember: 'YOU WANT TO BE SEEN AT THE PEAK YOU NEED TO CLIMB YOURSELF'. In addition, the family you appoint should loves the animals. They are few checks you need to do when you have someone else taking care.

All the best

Please ensure that sufficient quantity ( 20-25 kg/cow/day) green fodder is made available to the animals throughout the year

It is a good idea to go For.. However, 10-15 cows to start with needs lots Of analysis and planning..
Check out for Some existing farms to get a good idea of the Dairy shed arragement, feeding cycle, milking, preservation and marketing, herd health manangement, labour managerment...

It is very essential to figure out the per Litre EXPENSE / RETURN data's ..

Best of Luck..

Dear Sir

pls make sure that u have the right medication, dosing for the cows pls keep in contct with the nearest veterinary as well as medical centres. no disease will prevail if ur conditions are hygyenic.

Its a great idea to start a cow farm. Regarding manpower experience would not count as they are not technical people but simply labourers. Most farms fail because of over dependence on labourers. The labourers job is to do work with dedication and to follow daily farm operations. Few key points to keep in mind are:-
1. follow recommended vaccination schedule for FMD, HS, BQ and Theleriosis.
2. Ensure comfortable housing for animals.
3. Always have a young breeding bull of high pedigree.
4. Ensure control over ecto and indo parasites as most common cow diseases like anaplasmosis, Red Water, Trypanasomasis, Tick fever etc are result of parasites.
5. Keep the animals on a recommended nutrition table.
7. Ensure atleast 80% calf survival rate.
8. ensure a max. calving interval of 14-15 months.
