Soilless culture has often been called hydroponics, although nutri-culture is a more accurate
definition of certain types.
The methods of growing plants without soil into two general categories:
fall
(a) Liquid culture (true hydroponics), where the nutrient solution is recirculated after reaeration and adjustment of pH and nutrient levels (e.g.
the NFT) and
(b) Aggregate culture, where the nutrient solution is supplied to plants via an irrigation system
through the media, and excess solution is allowed to run to waste or the solution is recirculated (e.g. rockwool, pumice, perlite, sand culture, gravel culture etc.).

Advantages of soilless cultures
l-Increase productivity
2-Control of plant nutrition
3-Water economy and control
4-Reduction of labor requirement
5-Steriliition practices
6-Control of root environment
7-Multiple crops per year
8-Unsuitable soil

Constraints
l-High capital investment
2-Increased technical demands In the management
3-Risk of disease infections
