Dear Dr. Saghal and Priadarshini,

Precisely what changes would be seen in Indian horticulture in next five years with hydroponics in focus?

Regards,
Shweta
Most of us do not have backyards or a home garden where one could grow hydroponically, but if we get into large scale (1 acre plus) hydroponic farming then there is going to be a lot of hydroponic farms in the making and running. The hydroponic farms could move closer to markets as the logistics would vastly improve. Note that there is no export market for hydroponic produce as the farmer can grow a crop in the importing market itself. Irrespective of the location.Besides this kind of farming is intensive high productivity farming.

With the advent of hydroponics in India, Indian Horticulture industry is bound to grow leaps and bounds. You can estimate the success of hydroponics with the fact that not only the farming communities, but also the corporate giants are venturing into horticulture especially hydroponics in a big way. Many farmers are doing controlled environment agriculture already and many people, especially youth are now showing interest in automated hydroponic projects all over India. With hydroponic CEA, our farmers would not be worried of animal nuisances and natural forces like drought, hailstorm while growing crops. They will have better control over their growing conditions and pest problems. Agriculture sector is booming these days with good
subsidies offered on such projects by various state and central governments; and in India, with more mouths to feed and depleting agriculture land and resources, farmers would surely like to explore new innovative methods of farming that can increase the quality and quantity of their yield in a feasible, practical way.

Hydroponic gardens in history trace back to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Aztec Indians had a system of growing crops on rafts in shallow lakes, near Mexico City. Developments did not start taking place in Europe until 1699 when Woodward found that he could grow plants in a solution of water to which soil had been added. Liebig, a German scientist, started using nutrient solutions to study the nutritional requirements of plants in the 1850's and was followed by Sachs in 1860 and Knop in 1861 who made studies of nutrient elements in water solutions. They were able to grow plants in nutrient solutions made up from mineral salts eliminating the need for soil.

Research continued and by 1925, practical applications of hydroponics were being made in the greenhouse industry. The next decade witnessed extensive development as researchers became aware of the potential of growing hydroponically. In 1930, Gericke produced the first commercial hydroponic unit in the USA. Later during World War II, the American forces in the Pacific grew vegetable crops hydroponically. Developments continued and the commercial use of hydroponics spread throughout the world, but it was the development of N.F.T. system by Dr. Alan Cooper in the 1970's, along with improved nutritional formulations that made the hydroponic growing of a wide range of plants commercially viable. Since then many developed and developing countries all over the world are adopting this farming method with minor modifications, although basic principle remains the same.

Hi Priyadarshini,

Hydroponics is not too easy as it is said because it can be labor-intensive to maintain the correct balances. What is your opinion on the statement?

Hydroponics is not at all labor intensive as compared to soil farming. To maintain the correct balances like pH, EC, humidity, temperature, nutrient application, farmers can go for automation. Automating the farm will help you to keep a check on all these factors. One trained person is enough to look after the affairs of a hydroponic farm of size 1 acre. If the farm is of 4-5 acres, 2-3 persons are required for monitoring. Growing and harvesting require very less effort as soil is not involved.

Hi Priyadarshini,

Hydroponics is suitable mostly for exotic vegetables like lettuce or asparagus where as regular vegetables like tomatoes are rich in flavors if grown in soil. Please explain.

It is completely wrong notion that only exotic vegetables can be grown in hydroponics. Nearly any vegetable can be grown using hydroponics, if we choose the right technique of hydroponics. Tomatoes come really well in hydroponic farming, whether you grow them in trough/grow bag cultivation, NFT or aeroponics. In hydroponic cultivation, farmers are getting higher yield of tomatoes. In the controlled environment, the plants’ exact requirements can be met with temperature & humidity control, supplemental nutrition and safeguarding it from weather fluctuations and pest attack. This enables the farmer to harvest yield all year long without sacrificing taste and goodness. In soil, most of the fertilizers leach deep into the soil and therefore, plants are unable to absorb them, thereby, unable to grow up to their full genetic potential.

Because hydroponic plants get direct and complete nutrition delivered to their roots at the right phase, hydroponic tomatoes are not only very good in quality, but also comparatively bigger, tastier and more nutritious as compared to their soil-grown counterparts.

Priyadarshini

As said earlier, farmers can grow any crop with hydroponics, from tomatoes, zucchini, broccoli, lettuce, iceberg, cucumbers, egg plants, bell peppers, okra, flowers like gerbera, lilium, Anthurirum, and herbs…almost everything. The most important factor to consider here is the market for selling the produce. Marketing of the produce is something that farmers need to think before venturing into hydroponic farming. If they find a potential market nearby, well and good; if it is far, then supply chain has to be taken care of. It is always advisable to do a good research on the cost economics, feasibility of the hydroponic project for the given area before entering this field.

Why don't you consider Israeli Hydroponic Agriculture & Aquaculture. Please send me your email address and I will send you a presentation on Hydroponic farming.By the way, this kind of farming is soilless and the agros are grown using water only in a filtered Green House where ideal growing conditions are maintained.

More in the presentation.

Dear Farmers and progressive growers,

As a grower myself in Delhi NCR for around 5 years now and having 5 acres under protected cultivation, let me share some facts about Hydroponics. Sure it is the latest trend going on in cultivation circles and it has its benefits but we in India do not get those kind of remuneration or benefits which are available for foreign growers.

I have tried 500 m2 in hydroponics and agreed the yield is more but the costs incurred are not proportional to the returns. Where a simple poly house will break even in two to three years a hydroponic set up will take up at least 5 years to pay back.

Just for your information coloured capsicum was going at 9 Rs a kg two weeks ago.

Please dear friends do not come under the influence of all these consultants and block your hard earned money in this venture. Till the date we do not have a solid infrastructure of electricity and post harvest management, Hydroponics is only good as a research tool.

hydroponics isnt profitable on nindian context

Hey All,

Very happy to see our farming community is seriously. unlike the foreign countries the cost of vegetables are low in Indian market and selling at a premium price will be almost equal to bill of buyers. ...OK. so lemme do a simple and brief equation for us guys who are planning on opting hydroponics, seting up a hydroponic plant for one acre will coast u around 40-50 lacksin gross and by expecting one lack of net profit per year it will take 40 to 50 years to actually make ur initial... investment so unless fovrmnt doesn't preasurise on it and subsidies the setup cost to be suitable for use in India it is most likely to be just good for reaserach not for cmmrcial purpose!
