Hi!
I have been doing some studies in this area. Tamilnadu Government has made a lot of relaxations of rules. I am not very sure of Karnataka Govt rules pertaining to sandalwood cultivation. As far as I know, Individual growers can plant saplings in thier fields. They have to get it registered with Local VAO and update thier citta pass books with number of saplings planted. At present sandalwood tree owners can only sell to Govt bodies. In Karnataka, I think the people can only sell to three govt bodies : the forest dept, Mysore sandal soap and karnataka handicrafts board. you will get 80% of value of tree. The cost of saplings range from Rs 15 to Rs 20. The recomended planting distance is 5m x 5m. However, I should say this with caution because, very limited commercial planation studies are available for this crop as this had been protected by the govt for a very long time. Intercroping seems to be a must as sandalwood is parasiting in nature. some sources say that atleast 5 different hosts are required for good development of sandalwood. Here again, data as to best intercropping plant is unavailable. Security is usually not required for first 10 years as the heart wood, the most valuble part of the plant does not develop for the first 10 years. you can start cutting after 30 years. Heartwood develops only when plant is subjected to some sort of stress like water starvation (however, It is not very clear) so after establishment, it is advisable to withdraw water. You cannot enjoy the fruits of this crop only your future generations can.

(g) What will be the expected yield (weight per plant) and what would be expected cost per Kg or plant?
It really depends on the growth for your soil, your microclimate & rainfall. At 30 Years + 1 ton per plant is not uncommon. Right now, heart wood sells for Rs 3000 a Kg!

sandal wood cultivation

pbblj has provided enough information and status of researches on sandal wood. I am also generating seedlings at my high tech MAP nursery and plantation in SEONI (MP). DS Agrotech, New Delhi has established sandal plantation on approximately 200 acres land in SEONI. I think if they permit u should visit and see progress of plantaion which is 4-5year old.

Sandalwood Plantations

Dear greenfarm,

Mr.Pbbij throwed some lights about sandalwood plantations.I think he explained about wild plantations. But you want field cultivations/plantations.I forest nobody sow the seeds .The fruit of sandalwood dropped after maturity. You know the germination ratio is 40 to 45 % after done the seeds treatment. But in the forest the germination ratio is 20% maximum.there is no seed treatment.Out of the 20% germination plants the survival is 10% .This process will take for nearly two years in forest. Now we can go field cultivation. The govt of India passed one ordinance in the year of 2002 to permit the farmers to cultivate in the bucca patta lands .So Karnataka comes under this act.The sandalwood plant will grow in all soils except black cotton and clay soils.Red soils with crawal is good.We can plant the sandalwood plant in three dimesion like 8'x8',10'x10' and 12'x12' .Because this is a small type tree .This is a semi parasite plant so we have plant hosting plant in between two sandalwood plants pernials.During the plantations we will plant some nitrzon fixing plants like redgram on temperory measure i.e annuals. The maximum length of cultivation is 13 years in field under our supervision and care at the same time it will take 25 to 30 years in wild/forests.Mr greenfarm definitely you will enjoy the fruit and yield of sandal wood frgrance in your life span. Here i want tell the yield of the sandalwood tree is maximum 60Kgs on completion of 10 to 13 years. The portion of heart wood is 20 to 30 kgs.Now the market price is Rs 5000/-per kg.there is no wastage in sandalwood tree. After deducting the heartwqood portion we get 40 to 30 kgs .this also gives income to the farmers.i.e small stumps, parks and waste of timber can be used for agarbathies , pan, dhoop ,Panmasla.By this way the farmers will get nearly Rs 1500 to 2000/-per kg.
