Tell us about your background.
I am Mr Rajeevan Narayaswamy. After having graduated in Microbiology from Mysore university, I joined Wellisen Nutraceuticals (formerly, Ballarpur Industries) in June 1992. It was at Wellisen Nutraceuticals that I successfully started the commercial production of Spirulina Platensis, a blue green algae. This project was implemented with the help of The Central Food Technical Research Institute (CFTRI) Mysore. During the course of this project I got to work alongside two scientists – Mr. Kaluahns Wagner from Germany and Mr. Avogaurd Vonshok from Israel.
Currently what are you doing?
Currently, I run my own business Aquaseal Technologies in addition to catering to the distribution of Spirulina powder to domestic and overseas customers. I also work as a coach to all those who need guidance in cultivation of Spirulina.
Can you tell us about the benefits of Spirulina?
My research on Spirulina has led me to understand that by using Spirulina and Azolla, the yield of paddy can be increased by 3 times in comparison to the normal method of cultivation. As mentioned earlier, today, I also work as a coach to people who are interested in Spirulina cultivation, all over India. I also educate companies about the use of Spirulina in daily consumable food items and beverages. Spirulina is a protein-rich vegetable that is easy to digest – age no bar. My farm has the capacity to produce 40 metric tonnes of Spirulina. This Spirulina powder is distributed to clients who further sell it in their space. CFRI had taken a lot of interest in marketing this product because it is one of the best products that can be consumed by mixing with milk-based derivatives, chocolates, sweets, ground nut chikkis. They are wonderful Spirulina combinations that can be consumed for better health.
Do you export it as well?
In the international space, I export it to Japan, Germany and US based companies, and have an FDA certification as well.
What are the health benefits of Spirulina?
The health benefits of Spirulina are aplenty. To list a few:
1. It is highly nutritious. A single tablespoon of Spirulina powder gives you protein, Vitamin B1, B2 and B3, Copper, Iron, decent amounts of magnesium, potassium, manganese and traces of almost all other nutrients required by the human body.
2. Spirulina has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Phycocyanin is the main active compound in Spirulina. It has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
3. Spirulina can help lower cholesterol levels. Studies indicate that Spirulina can lower triglycerides and “bad” LDL cholesterol and may simultaneously raise “good” HDL cholesterol.
How can farmers benefit from it?
I aim at helping the farmers by spreading the word of Spirulina. I believe that cutting down the cost of cultivation is what farmers should aim at. The beauty of it all is that the scale at which one wants to cultivate Spirulina can be decided based on the need of the product. It can be cultivated in a small scale as well.
What about the capital requirement for Spirulina cultivation?
It is subjective to market conditions and the purpose behind cultivation. The cost depends on many factors like initial construction of ponds, the progress in the cultivation process, etc. So, the capital requirement depends on one’s individual plan. Spirulina is an amazing supplement, high in nutrition – one which can be consumed by adults and children alike. For the same reason, quality of production must be given utmost importance. It is mandatory that every batch of Spirulina must be tested in a lab before marketing it. Also, it is important that qualified people are hired for testing every batch of Spirulina.
Any message for farmers interested in cultivating Spirulina?
I can assist in all aspects of Spirulina cultivation from scratch to despatch. I can help, being a guide, from initial set up to marketing of the product as well. I am open to people contacting me for assistance, even if it is for seeing how other plants work. Being a consultant for some time now, I have access to a lot of Spirulina farms in different locations. Now, you know where to go if you need expert advice on Spirulina.
