Bamboo Plantation

Dear Mr Vilas,

In many states, bamboo has been removed from the list of forest spices and farmers are now allow to grow and sell bamboo. Aplantation of bamboo is a highly paying proposition. Bamboo poles are in demand throughout the year. The largest demand comea from basket makers. A single pole, 10M long and about 10cm dia at base ,sells for Rs. 50 to 70 each depanding epon the geographic location of the point of sale.

In most of the part of India two spices suitable for cultivation are Bambusa Vulgaris and Ddendrocalamus Strictus. The seedlings are generally obtained from nurseries maintained by the Department of forest of the state Govt.

Seedlings should be Raised in plastic bags and when they are 2 years old ,they should be transplanted in to the field, in rows 3 mts apart. The plant to plant spacing within the row should be 1mt. Which requires 3333 plants per hectare .

The first harvest can be undertaken when the crop is 5 years old, all clums that are 3 years and above in age to be harvested, leaving only 2 and 1 year old culms in each clump. From 6th year onwards ,one gets larger culms for which the normal market price of Rs. 40 to 50 per culm is realsable. After the 7th year one gets annually about 25000 culm per hect. Fetching a gross value of Rs. 5 Lacs to 10 Lacs.

A bamboo plantation is always more beneficial than Teek-Wood plantation as it start giving yield much faster, also yuo can sell bamboo directly in market or either chemically treat it to increase its life to 20 years or make articles out of it and sell it to get value addition.
Thanks and Regards
