WASHINGTON—The U.S.organic industry grew 9.5 percent in 2011, with sales reaching $31.5 billion, according to a survey from the Organic Trade Association (OTA). Organic food accounted for $29.22 billion, while organic non-food sector reached $2.2 billion, according to findings from the OTA's 2012 Organic Industry Survey. This and all other findings from the survey will be discussed in conjunction with the trade association's 2012 Policy Conference and Hill Visit Days in Washington.

According to the association, it matters to consumers if foods are genetically engineered. The OTA also reported that price continues to be a concern.

Overall organic product sales growth continued to outpace the 4.7-percent total sales of comparable conventionally produced food and non-food items.

According to the OTA, organic food currently represents 4.2 percent of all U.S. food sales; this is up slightly from 4 percent in 2010. Organic non-food sales experienced 11-percent growth, whereas total comparable non-organic sales grew only 5 percent.

In 2011, the organic food sector grew by $2.5 billion, with the fruit and vegetable category contributing nearly 50 percent of new dollars. However, the fastest growing sector was the meat, fish and poultry category, which reported 13-percent growth over 2010 sales. Still, this remains the smallest of the eight organic food categories.

Through the 2012 survey results, the OTA predicts organic food and non-food sales to continue to grow between 2012 and 2013.

The OTA partnered with California Certified Organic Farmers Inc. in March 2011 to strengthen the organic industry's national public policy effectiveness for the entire organic sector.
