Orchard in black clay soils

Hi,

Can anyone suggest what kind of fruit tree orchard be established in black soils? My land is in Amalner Taluka, Jalgaon district in Maharashtra.

Thanks!

Hi

You can take up mango, citrus but please avoid excess irrigation and also water logging conditions. It would be even better if you approach the horticulture officer in your district and he will check the field conditions and suggest appropriately.

Hi,

To make the soil porous and less clay based, keep adding compost and organic matter. Going for summer and winter cover crops and allowing it to decay into the soil also should help.

I had a clay based home garden (may be 10X40) and after adding compost and mulch, the soil structure has improved a lot. It is more aerated now. Ofcourse it took me 2 years.
