Conserves, documents and distributes adapted and diverse varieties of agricultural open-pollinated seeds

One stop for all sorts of heirloom seeds for vegetable herbs and flowers is at Nimai Garden, Bangalore, Karnataka. The prices are thoughtfully kept affordable because the company founder and director, Mr. Vishwanath Yadav believes, “Farmers will stop using hybrid and GMO seeds only when native/heirloom seeds are accessible with respect to price and availability. We promote use of these 100% open-pollinated seeds for challenging climates. We seek to foster an organic community of seed-savers and farmers who work harmoniously with their local ecology.”

Mr. Vishwanath Yadav

Mr. Yadav, is IT professional turned seed saver and organic farmer since 2009. He is able to conserve the seeds with the help of a specialized network of dedicated growers. “This unique network assists in increasing our seed production of varieties that we are unable to grow on our own property. Though we are starting with 50 plus OP varieties vegetable seeds, we would be increasing it to steady numbers in future,” he highlights. The seeds are available at the online store http://www.nimaigarden.in/ or company office. “I have 340 seeds collection out of which 140 seeds are offered for sale considering the commercial farming success taking into account Indian climatic conditions.” Buyers can choose from the great mix of regular veggies like greens, peas, brinjal, tomatoes as well as novel vegetables seeds such as purple king pole bean, sugar baby watermelon, solar yellow carrot, China rose radish, golden wax bush bean and so on from the wide array of seeds collection. These seeds are absolutely natural and never treated hence promise nutritious yield to the farmers. Seeds are sold in retail as well as wholesale.

Speaking of GMO and hybrid seeds Mr. Yadav opines, “GMO seeds are not less than poison. It must never be used as it is extremely bad for the soil and human health. Hybrid seeds should also be avoided but farmers use it for its uniform production unlike in indigenous seeds. But for the uniform production farmers tend to pay huge price as hybrid seeds are very expensive and the vegetables produced are not nutritious. On the contrary with use of heirloom/native seeds, production may vary but it yields nutrient rich vegetables and never harms the soil. Further most important, farmers needs to buy heirloom/desi seeds only once because for the next season they can produce their own seeds.”

Native seeds are prone to pest attack. “It is a myth! A wrong notion! Seeds will germinate well when soil is sturdy and to make soil sturdy farmer need to follow natural farming practices that involves using neem cakes, cow dung and urine based pesticides etc. Further if the soil has good nutrient content then it will have strength to fight the diseases and other plant growth issues,” he clarifies.

Mr. Yadav claims, “Our seeds are conserved in the cold storage in apt controlled temperature. The germination success rate is 100% but we put it across as 70%. Further we provide little extra seeds free in every pack because our purpose is that farmers regain his confidence on these native open pollinated seeds.” Other than conserving and supplying heirloom seeds Mr. Yadav maintains a goushala (cow shed) to protect indigenous breed of dry cows and bulls. All these are mostly rescued from the slaughter houses.

“Presently the herd size in goushala is 22. In all there might be 8 different breeds namely Kapila, Sahiwal, Malenadu Gidda, Gir, Ongole, Punganur, Tharparkar and Vichur. The dung and urine is collected and sold after processing into panchgavya and other farming inputs. This is done with the aim to create and present goushala as sustainable model for farmers to explain them that even if the cows are dry do not sell them to slaughter houses. Retain them for its’ dung and urine. Allow them to live and die naturally,” he asserts.

All the cattle are fed with balance diet with green fodder grown at Mr. Yadav’s farm and rest of the silage and hay are purchased from other farms/market. “It is solely maintained by myself and I do not take any donation for the same.” With seeds business going steady Mr. Yadav has also diversified into organic fruits and related products business.

Demand for heirloom seed is increasing slowly as the awareness is increasing. “I shall be concentrating on seeds as well as fruits. Residue free food is the future and I want to stick with the right thing always. Hope more and more people become part of this change and be instrumental in bringing the revolution of nutritious and healthy food with change in farming practices!” he signs off.
