Dragon fruit a recently introduced super fruit in India, is considered to be a promising,
remunerative fruit crop.

Fruit has very attractive color and mellow mouth melting pulp with black color edible seed embedded in the pulp along with tremendous nutritive properties.

Dragon fruit originated in Mexico and Central and South America but now it’s being grown commercially in Israel, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia , Thailand , Nicaragua, Australia and US and recently India joined in the country list . Many commercial orchards in Pune, Tamil Nadu , Gujarat , West Bengal , Karnataka , Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan stared cultivation of Dragon fruit with latest irrigation technology for higher yield.

It is a long day plant with beautiful night blooming flower that is nicknamed Dragon fruit as “Noble Woman” or “Queen of the Night”. The fruit is also known as Strawberry Pear,Pithaya, Night blooming Cereus, Belle of the night, Conderella plant and Jesus in the Cradle etc.
Fruit is named as Pitaya because of the bracts or scales on the fruit skin and hence the name Pitaya means ‘the scaly fruit ‘

Dragon fruit or Pitaya grows best in uniformly distributed rainfall throughout the year. It prefers free draining soil with sandy to clay loam types, 5.3 to 6.7 pH and high organic matter.
Dragon fruit stems are scandent (climbing habit), creeping, sprawling or clambering, and branch profusely. There can be 4-7 of them, between 5 and 10 m or longer, with joints from 30–120 cm or longer, and 10–12 cm thick . Dragon fruit being a cactus requires very less water as compared to other crops/fruits. It can survive in drought conditions . Best recommended method of irrigation is Drip irrigation. Approximately 1 to 2 litres of water per day per plant is sufficient.

Dragon fruit normally fruits after 18-24 months after plantation .Normally yields approx 15 to 25 kg of fruits.
These fruits are sold in the retail market at Rs.200 to 300 per kg, but the general farm rate is approx between Rs. 80 to 120 per kg.
Investment :
Cultivation cost : 4-5 lac per acre
ROI in 3 rd year .
