Question Need suggestion for cultivating vegetables in Hydroponic method

1.I had grown a plant of lady finger( vegetable)in a 1 lit jar hydroponically it gave 9fruits but so tiny in siz e &
plant is only35 cm height &tiny leaves
Let me know the reason & remedy if any.
2.the roots in the water are getting black and brown.pls suggest
