Planting Methods:
Teak can be planted at 2m x 2m, 2.5m x 3 m or 3m x 3m escapement. It can also be raised along with agricultural crops at a spacing of 4m x 4m or 5m x 5m.
• Plough lands thoroughly and level it of. Mark the areas for pit digging by alignment and staking.
• Dig pits of 45 x 45 x 45 cm sizes. Refill the soil after seasoning and mixing with Farm Yard Manure and insecticides. On poor gravely sites, replace the pit soil by good soil.
• Use pre sprouted stumps or poly pots for planting.
• Firm up the soil after planting and apply irrigation wherever necessary.
• Apply 100 g of compost fertilizer in pit at the time of planting and thereafter in split doses or as per the fertility status of soil.
• Carry out weeding operations regularly. Weeding may be carried out @ 3 operations in the first year, 2 operations in second year and one operation in the third year.
• Carry out soil working periodically for better growth of plants. One working in the Ist year and two workings in 2nd and 3rd year may be adequate.
• De-budding in the initial years may be done to improve the quality of timber.
Irrigation:
Study has revealed that, irrigation during stress period boosts the growth of the plants. Irrigation should be followed by weeding (3,2,1) and adequate soil working. Two doses of fertilizer (in the month of August & September) @ 50 gm per plant of NPK (15:15:15) may be provided every year up to three years. By increasing the inputs of irrigation and frequent thinning, it is possible to increase the rate of diameter growth.

Now a days the teak and other kinds of timber plants cultivation got much awareness among the farmers and public since a nice cultivation and wise investment.

We are having the Tissue Culture teak saplings (NC-21/Balarsha) for fast growth, uniform growth and early maturity(minimum 15 years onwards). The tissue culture teak will grows very fast while comparing with the stump culture teak seedlings. For example the earlier stump culture teak seedlings are propagated by macro propagation but the tissue culture teak saplings are propagated by micro propagation by advance technology (bio tech) for fast growth and better yields in short term cultivation.
The red soil is very suitable for TC teak cultivation under irrigation.Kindly avoid the black soil, black cotton soil, clay soil and paddy fields for teak cultivation. We can accommodate nearly 500 TC saplings in one acre land in the standard and suggested spacing dimension of 10'x10'.If we opt triangle spacing dimension we will plant 10% more plants in one acre.

The maturity period of the tissue culture teak will be minimum 15 years onwards subject to the soil condition, irrigation and well care .We also have the TC teak saplings for ready to plantation with complete consultancy. The ordinary teak stump seedlings will get maturity on completion of minimum 40 years. We are able to supply Tissue Culture teak saplings to any destination in India.

We also having the Swetinea Mahagany seedlings (seed germinated plants) for ready to plant. The cost of the Mahagany seedling will be ₹ 20/-per plant.

Its a miracle n wonder that the harvest of tissue culture teak tree on completion of 10 to 15 years.I think it's not good practice and also it can be used for poles.Any how I request the moderator of Agricultureinformation.com will throw some light in this issue.

A Sivakumar.

As a scientist working in forest tree genetics and tissue culture, I would like to throw some light on the claim that tissue culture of teak ( or any other tree crop) can result in early growth and better yields. Tissue culture is just another clonal propagation method like rooted cuttings , grafting or layering and the plants produced can be only as good as the mother plants. The tissue culture technique does not give any other benefit other than perhaps disease and pest free ( not resistant ) plants. I am surprised at the number of farmers who go under the impression that tissue culture plants can be harvested in 10 years. And they pay any amount to purchase the tissue culture plants when the actual cost of production cannot be more than Rs. 20/-. It is also not very clear who has selected the good mother trees and tested it in field to evaluate the clonal performance. Such field trial are only being conducted by the research institutes and not the tissue culture companies. Anyone interested in tissue culture teak should be asking this questions from the seller. Performance of teak using stumps or seedlings under intensive agriculture itself will produce good results but never the type of results being claimed by unscrupulous companies.

Hi Murali,

You have stated that Tissue culture is utter waste method some times
I Dn't know the how you justify that the production cost of Tissue Culture teak sapling will be ₹ 20/- per plant.Strictly telling the cost of the tissue culture teak sapling will be only ₹ 18/- per plant.Mr Murali you see the plant only.Whatabout infrastructure for setting a bio tek lab cost, technicians salary power consumption bills, primary hardening in poly house maintanence the temperature , micro sprinklers for relative humidity in the poly house ,exhaust fans using in the poly house for reducing unwanted polluted air and maintaining the required temperature in the poly house, skilled and un skilled man power for doing the primary Harding and second hardening .Ifany procedure will lapse in any stage the entire tissue culture plants are to be worn out within the moment.Mr .Murali please visit one of the tissue culture lab. Recent past the g9 banana tissue culture saplings were sold for the cost of ₹ 5/-per plant an account of rain fails in Andhra Teleghana Maharastra and Karnataka. In some places the g9 banana saplings were worn out due non availability of water
Using the teak stumps the farmer will get good returns that you have stated .When they have got good returns tell me Mr.Murali ? .I hope that the stump culture will matured on completion of 35 years minimum. So Mr Murali without knowing anything you should post wrong and false posting in this forum.

Regards,

A Sivakumar.

Re. the message by Mr Sivakumar, I will add that there is a wide variation in cost of tissue culture plantlets of teak that different companies are charging the farmers. Rs 300 in some cases I was told!. Does Mr Sivakumar have an explanation or justification. Rs. 18 or 20 per plant depends on the clone or the procedure or the laboratory efficiency. It can be brought further down. But more importantly, with no information on the testing of mother plants ( which itself should be part of a selection programme done by experts) how can the companies make claims of its performance in the farmers field. What about the farmers who are being cheated when the plants do not perform some 5 or more years later? Most farmers in their ignorance are led to think that tissue culture means higher yield or faster growth. Do you also claim this? If so what is your explanation.
I am a scientist with an experience in tree tissue culture for many years ( and in teak also), so please go ahead and tell me what is the " wrong and false posting" that I have made here? What do I gain by doing that.
If teak farmer is promised profits in 10 years or good quality and quantity of timber in 20 years, that is cheating. At 20 years any teak plant grown properly from stumps can be profitable enough for the farmer in most situations. I am not making comparisions with any other crop.

Dr. E.M.Muralidharan

Hello Mr. Murali,

Being a good scientist in genetics and bio technology you should not write about tissue culture teak. But cheating in the Agri/horti is a universe problem. For this purpose central govt and state governments having so many restriction like plant pathology certificate from concerned dept.Mostly the tissue culture teak mother culture are obtained from forest r centre (micro propagation) like Biostream, Tirupathi. This is the actual procedure for tissue culture propagation method.I want to anylyse the stump culture .The age of the seed is minimum 30 to 40 years. But what happening now days even below ten years old tree also utilised for seed collection.Normally the kerala farmers verymuch interested in stump culture plants of teak farming. Most of stumps were supplied fromTamilnadu So how can you state and justify that kerala farmers were satisfied with the stumps and also much benefit?

It is precisely because I am a ( "good ":)) scientist working in this area that I am writing about the dangers of tissue culture being misused by unscrupulous companies who sell for unreasonable prices and give unreasonable promises. Please note that I am not saying anything about the technology per se. If the mother plants have been selected as part of a research programme that has been completed ( which means only those clones of plus trees proven to be superior in field trials are used for tissue culture propagation) only then can the claim of higher timber yield, faster growth, higher heartwood content or any other desirable trait be expected. As far as I know BIOTRIM in Tirupati ( which might have completed such a study) does not supply the cultures to private firms but in case they do the companies should advertise the fact on their website or advertisements. I do not have information to support or reject your claim about the origin or quality of stumps used in Kerala but I think teak is profitable to cultivate even from these stumps or seedlings. We have the offices of the TEAKNET ( International Teak Information Network ) at KFRI and we still have lots of farmers who still show interest in teak cultivation.

Mr.Murali sir I am not bother about the misuse ,frauds and false propaganda about tissue culture. But tissue culture is a hi-tech in arboriculture and internationally proven one.A farmer planted the teak stumps in Tamil Nadu the maturity of the teak will take minimum 30 to 40 years even though girth of the he teak tree very very less while comparing with tissue culture. In kerala some what better than Tamilmnadu but less than tissue culture. One more thing I want to say here that many portion of area in Kerala and Tamil Nadu not aware of the tissue culture and its benefits .Since you are also not encouging .So kindly find good biotek labs with related documents and certificates and activate.

Mr Sivakumar,
Please read my arguments in the previous messages to understand what exactly I am against. The only option for farmers and tissue culture companies to prevent fraud or overcharging is to have proper certificates for any claim being made regarding superiority of the tissue culture plants/demonstration of this superiority in field.

Dear Murali sir,
I want to do teak tissue culture plantation in my private land but before going ahead need to discuss regarding teak tissue culture false claims and actual truth.
Please provide your contact details.
Email is will be fine.
