Hello,
I have fertile land near pune and want to experiment Taiwan led lady papaya farming. I want to know are there any specific reasons why taiwan Papaya farming is not so popular and practiced in Pune and nearby areas? Also, i need further guidance as i intend to experiment this as soon as possible.

Hi

As such taiwan red Lady is the leading Papaya hybrid grown in Southern states of India

There might be some other variety in and around Pune, find out.

As per my experience the best hybrid is Taiwan red Lady. Go for it

Take care of the following

1. Health seedlings
2. Integrated pest 7 Disease management
3. Poly mulch
4. Fertigation
5. Bio-fertilisers
6. Proper drainage

Are very crucial

Dear Gaurav,

I think this is a lack of information regarding Red lady papaya cultivation. You can start with minimum land holding at least 50 plants. Here same tips .....

1. For the cultivation of Papaya crop the soil of the field must be very fertile. The land where rain water accumulates is not fruitful for this crop.
2. Do not grow any other crop with papaya and do not grow papaya with any other crop.
3. Do not grow new papaya crop nearby old once.
4. The distance between each papaya plant must be 7*6 or 6*5 feet.
5. There must be 1100 papaya plants per acre.
6. Before the cultivation of this crop the farm must be well equipped with gobar fertilizers i.e. 3 to 5 trolly of the tractor per acre.
7. Also aid 3 to 5 bags of super fertilizer in the field.
8. Keep the plants before 3 to 4 days before actual farming in order to acclimatize the plants in the climate of your region.
9. Do not keep plants in closed room or godown. Instead keep them on the shadow of tree where proper trespassing of air occurred.
10. Farm the plants in field after noon time.
11. Always keep the pump used in spray for this crop separate from other crops.
12. Do not use pesticides or insecticides in papaya plants.
13. You can put the papaya crop in between maize crop in order to save the plants from the sun.
14. Once the papaya plants grow to a minimum height cut out the makka crop from the field.
15. Irrigation of the plants must be in accordance with need. It requires more irrigation in summer.
16. Gather the surrounding soil to the plant before rainy days.
17. After first rain paint the plants with copper sulphate or lime below the fruits height.

Thank you very much for your detailed response. I'll be doing soil testing soon and will share the results with you for further guidance. In the meantime could you please advise me on the known viruses which are attracted by this crop and remedies which cure the same. I am an IT professional and would like to get into farming hence collecting as much information as possible.

Thanks Harish for your response. I really appreciate. I recently approached one of the nurseries here and inquired papaya 786 seedling prices, is 9 Re. per plant a reasonable price tag? To begin with i will be experimenting this in 1 acre land and once i get confidence i'll do it on a larger scale.

Dear Gaurav,

Redlady papaya can resist mosaic virus that has generally found in papaya plant, the vector is whitefly Bemisia sp. If you found any incidence of leaf curling effect on your field immediately cut the plant & buried outside and inform your nearby Horticulture dept.
