Aloe Vera farming is profitable business. Being rich in medicinal properties its demand is high in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. Commercially it would be viable if it can be grown in 1.0 hectare farmland. It grows very well in dry land where the rainfall is relatively less. In water logging areas or heavey rainfall regions this plant won't survive. The most promising hybrid varieties are AL-1, IC111269 and IC111271.

Black cotton soil is best for aloe vera cultivation. The soil fertility should be medium varying from marginal to sub-marginal. The pH value of the soil should be 8.0. The soil texture should be loamy or sandy loamy. Soil around the root zone must be pressed firmly to ensure there is no water stagnation. As it is shallow rooted crop the land need not be deep ploughed but leveled land is vital. Beds must be made in a way that water flows smoothly without getting stagnant anywhere.

Aloe vera is grown through suckers. The best suitable sucker would be four months old having three-four leaves, approximately 20 cm in length. It the ideal distance to be maintained is - plant -plant 45*40 cm while row-row 60* 30 cm. In one hectare approximately 55,000 plants are transplanted maintaining the mentioned distance. The plant has green leaves that are fleshy and thick. It grows very well upto 50-90 cm tall. Commonly the flowers are produced in summers with the spike as high as 80 cam tall.

Watering everyday is not required for aloe vera farming. Only when the suckers are transplanted it needs immediate irrigation. Later once the suckers are set well in the soil and plant starts growing irrigation is done once in two weeks. During monsoon no irrigation is required at all.

The farm yard manure required is 15 tonne per hectare. Farm yard manure is used because it holds the moisture and enhances soil texture. NPK fertilizer will be required as 50:50:50/ha. However, in either case it is always recommended to get the soil tested to know the nutrient content required for bumper crop. Aloe vera is no-maintenance crop. It is resistant to disease or pest attack. Atleast nothing has been reported till date!

Harvesting is done from second year of plantation. It is done with sharp sickle. It proper crop management is practiced then the farm can harvest 15-20 tonne fresh aloe vera leaves right after one year of plantation/second year. Aloe vera is undoubtedly high in demand crop yet farmers needs to identify market and buyers before starting the cultivation. It is always helpful to plan well ahead.
