Saffron farming is quite a pricey cultivation not only its high quality seeds but also the climate. It grows well in warm sub-tropical climate and above 2000 meters of sea level. It needs 12 hours sunlight. Monsoon plays an important role. In the month of November if it rains, the blossom of saffron freezes and the entire year produce is lost!

The seed is sown in the month of August and it sprouts /flowers in October or November just for fifteen days. After sowing the seed we get 10% in 1st year and in 5th year it gives maximum produce. It grows well in acidic to neutral, gravellu, loamy and sandy soils. It requires well-drained soils and the pH should be 6-8. Heavy clays must be avoided. The plant must be nourished with farm yard manure. Keep it 100% organic as saffron flowers can be burnt down with the use of chemicals.

It is difficult to get saffron flowers. It is highly fragile. It is crucial to handle the flowers with precision. If the flowers are left unattended in a basket for more than two days, it ferments and the complete harvest goes waste.
