What is the best time to plant mango to get the best market rate?

What are the different varieties that are popular in TN and what is a reasonable rate for the sapling?

Which graft is better - softwood or approach?

Hi

Inarching, veneer grafting, side grafting and epicotyl grafting are the popular methods of propagation in mango.

One year old healthy, straight growing grafts from reliable sources can be planted at the centre of pits along with the ball of the earth intact during rainy season in such a way that the roots are not expanded and the graft union is above the ground level. Plants should be irrigated immediately after planting. In the initial one or two years, it is advisable to provide some shade to the young plants and also stake to make them grow straight. There are a lot of varieties.

Mango plantation

One should know the time it takes to begin the crop. If 1 year grown plants are planted it takes minimum 4 years to begin the crop. Since the plant is small it will have less number of stems and hence less crop. To get the reasonable crop to break-even the investment in terms of fertilizer etc farm inputs for that particular year it takes minimum of 10 years.
Therefore, it is very hard to predict the market condictions 10 years upfront.

Coming to Variety, Alphonso is the king of Mango fruit and fetches good price. But it will give good yield only in few particular geographies where soil is rich in minerals. Irrigation is required. other varieties to be looked at are Dushera, Malgova, Thothapuri, Banganpalli, Amarpaali etc.

Type of sapling, as mentioned by Ashvini any straight growing plant will be good. And we will need to manage the trunk size of minimum 5 feet from the ground with out any stems so that once tree grows to 60 years age and once stop giving the crop the tree can fetch you a minimum of INR 50,000 - 60,000 in terms of timber. For timber, trunk should be at least 6 feet straight and tree should have good number of grown up stems thereafter.
As suggested we will need to stake the plant atleast 4 years until trunk is grown strong to have the plant grown straight.

Hi Savera Farms

We are Hyderabad based agri consultants, who have good expertise in mango gained thru experiance of 20 years.

Mango can be planted round the year. As it takes 3 years to yield commercially. If it is annual crop, you have to consider the best season for market. Any how, by nature mangoes yields only in summer. Summer period is best for mangoes.

In Tamil Nadu especially in Southern Part of TN you can fine only Thotapuri in large extents. It is called as Banglura also. When, you are identify a right variety of mango for a particular region, you should consider many factors. Important is location, temperatures, over climatic condition and rain fall.

Forget about alphonso and daseri in southern TN. You dont have suitbale climatic conditions. One company planted Alpanso in foot hills of Kodai, they called me for some advice. There is good growth and moderate yield but the fruits misssed it natural aroma and taste.

For southern Tamil Nadu, Banginaplli is the best variety. I am recommending this variety because I am well aware where Banginapalli flourishes well and the status of Sivaganga region. Commercially it is good variety. Banginapally is a fruit of Andhra Pradesh. It is not properly projected like Alphonso. As per the latest marketing reports, slowly Banginaplly is going to occupy the Number one slot in market share and pushing Alphonso to No. 2 position. Any how it may take some time.

Grafted plants are good for propagation. You are welcome to contact me any thing about mangoes. As i roamed all over the country, and have presence of Sampada Farms in all most all the states of our country, sure I can provide you practical and applicable info.

Hi Ashwini,

You stated that shade should be provided to plants in intial one or two years. Please note that it is not advisable. Actually it gives negative results by providing shade. Mango is a sun loving plant. For your kind information.
