Small-Scale Livestock Development and Extension Techniques Course

Livestock make an important contribution to most economies. It produce food, provide security, enhance crop production, generate cash incomes for rural and urban populations, provide fuel and transport, and produce value added goods which can have multiplier effects and create a need for services. Furthermore, livestock diversify production and income, provide year-round employment, and spread risk. Livestock also form a major capital reserve of farming households. This training course is designed to provide a guideline to participants’ in small scale livestock production and management as a source of livelihoods.

Resilient Livelihoods Course

Disasters and food insecurity are directly interconnected. They interrupt agricultural production activities, market access, trade and food supply while reducing income and savings and eroding livelihoods. Drought, plant pests and diseases, animal diseases and food contamination have a direct economic impact; they reduce farm production adversely affect prices, trade and market access and by extension, contributing to reduced incomes and unemployment. Disasters create a poverty traps and increase the prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition. Disaster risk reduction is about protecting people’s livelihoods from shocks, and strengthening their capacity to absorb the impact of, and recover from, disruptive events. It is a necessary a major ingredient of food and nutrition security. Disaster risk reduction creates a multiplier effect that accelerates the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal 1: the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger.
