Earlier the HNSS scheme was proposed to create irrigation potential of about 6.025 Lakh Acres in Kurnool, Cuddapah, Ananthapur and Chittoor Districts and also to supply drinking water for about 30 Lakh population. The water requirement for the project is estimated to be about 40 TMC including drinking water proposed to be utilised from surplus water of Krishna. The lift is proposed from foreshore of Srisailam Reservoir near Malyala village of Kurnool District involving a static lift of 492 M (+254 M to 746 M). The total length of canal is 610 KM with 69 Nos. of stage lifts, which includes pumping mains and gravity canal system.



While the scheme was under investigation to accrue early benefits the Government has considered taking of this scheme in a Phased manner and accorded part administrative approval for Rs. 63.40 Crores for phase-I works i.e., for drinking water supply with 5.5 TMC utilisation vide G.O. Ms. No. 68, Dt. 6-5-1998.



This scheme was renamed as Handri Niva Drinking water supply scheme benefiting 33 Lakhs population in the districts of Kurnool, Ananthapur, and Chittoor utilising 5.5 TMC of water from Krishna River.



Three special land acquisition units were formed vide G.O. Ms. No. 66, Dt. 26-4-99 for speeding up acquisition of lands required for excavation of canal.



In compliance to the G.O. Ms. No. 68, Dt. 6th May 1998, the excavation of the canal was taken up during 1999-2000 in the following reaches incurring an expenditure of Rs. 224 Lakhs.
