Dear Sir

Intercropping depends on the type of land u have, soil type, region u want to cultivate and climate.
Where do u want to start it.
So far watermelon and guava are reported to be good intercrops for citrus.
Is ur citrus farm already established?

regards
kirti

Dear Kirti,

My land is very much fertile with black soil and is in use from several years with good water supply all year round. I am planning to develop citrus orchad in 5 acres. But as citrus will give results after 5 years, i need to use land for other crops as intercrops.

Regards,
SG

Guar as intercrop in Citrus

Dear shrigovind!
Citrus - if acid lime spacing is 5-6 mtr either side.If it is sweet orange the spacing is 7*7 meter. The acid lime population per acre is 111-160 nos where as sweet orange -90 plants/acre.

Initially the citrus plant will occupy 1000 sqm space in the overall area of 1 acre which is 4000 sqm.

This 1000 sqm area occupied by citrus will gradually increase to 3000 sqm as the plantation grow over the year.

Hence growing inter crop in citrus is not at all the problem expecially the guar plant is concerned which is after all 3 months crops with less water requirement. Hence the will not be much competition between main crop citrus and intercrop guar for either nutrients or water or sun shine or light or aeration. Further the guar is a complementary crop adding nitrogen to soil thro' biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen.

Only competing crop should not be raised as intercrop. But here the guar is a companian and complementary crop in terms of sharing of natural resources.

Even in the aspect of pest and disease also , these two crops do not share common pest and disease.

So growing guar as inter crop is advocated excepting the suitability of black soil for guar crop.Because

guar requires soil with good drainage.Any water stagnation will badly reflect on guar crop growth and yield of the pods.

Since you said your soil is black, kindly test for its clay content. If clay percentage is more better avoid guar and opt for some other profitable intercrop or you grow guar in summer with suitable soil tillage.

Wish you best of luck
