Future of agriculture

Seeing todays labour problems it might be very difficult for farmers to survive in only agriculture. Also the Farmer doesnt get anything for his produces. Middlemen make money... Its better to have some other means of income along with agriculture.... Today, in my place, we do agriculture for the labours to survive, NOT THE FARMER!!!. Eg: Today the cost of production of 1 kg Areca in our place comes around Rs.115.00.. now the price has risen a bit from Rs.80 to around 105 per KG!. Is it feasible? We have to get atleast Rs.200 per kg.. We have to look after our family, pay loans etc etc...Today the minimum wage of a daily worker is Rs.150 !. IF the price of 1 kg Areca goes more than 150, then the labour cost also will automatically go up!. Even the labours cannot do anything, since the price of daily commodities etc has gone up like anything!! Even the Goverments are not interested in supporting the producers (Farmers).. They are busy in their scams, vote banks etc etc....

Why do you need to discourage others.. Farming has its own merits and demerits like any other profession. I think if one lives a simple life, farming should be good. But if one wants to compare the earnings with those of software professionals or govt employees, better for him to stay away from farming. By the way, why are you selling superstition's like Rudraksha etc? For earning big money? For such money hungry people, farming is definitely not an option.

WE HAVE TO BE PRACTICAL! I am not discouraging anyone here. I have just told the facts faced by agriculturists in our place. it may vary from place to place. Have I told any lies about Areca crop? if you can maintain the labour costs, then agriculture is ok. Are everyone of us ready to do the work ourselves.?? Eg: Can we climb areca or other trees ourselves for spraying pesticides, for areca plucking?. If we can do those field work ourselves, then agriculture is good. Are our IT professionals capable of doing this??Also I have not compared with the IT professionals or the govt employees!!! About RUDRAKSHA, no one need to ask what I should grow in my agri land and what not! (I am not here to feed the lazy guys!!!. Its for making money.. you rightly said it!) its for those who believe!!! One might believe or not. Its left to them. Ofcourse we all have to make money for our living. I agree I make money in Rudraksha and keep my agriculture land..Otherwise I would have sold it long back when I got good offer. Many of my neighbours lands are for sale here. If anyone wants to buy good agriculture land, I can give them their contact details.

Inspite of me being a B.Pharma graduate, I have taken up agriculture as my main profession. I grow arecanut. plantains, pepper etc in my 8.50 acre agri land. What I was telling was that where will our agriculture go? IT professionals might be wanting to come to agri field. But they dont know the practical problems here. Many of the agriculturists here have sold or wanting to sell their lands and go to city for work even though they were born in the same village! Why?

when i see my roses taken to the temple,when i see boys takeing the rose to his beloved i forget my labour problum,things change from typewriter to computer ,we need to apply fresh thought ,fresh ideas,you also know it ,am not big person to tell you all this ,all i want to tell you is ,even the most expensive plane can not land on the earth if there is too much fog....am sure by another week you will send a post saying you have sloved the labour problum,all the best,get going boss..KISSAN IS KING

yes there is only farming servives in future , I can not undestand why people on earth are behind non required and non realistic /essential things , like devlopment in enginnering sectores , and growth in industrial buissness , if they don/t like farming, they should not eat food which is grown by farmer, they should eat only enginnering/industrial products only, and if this trend of industrial growth grows without growing food, then there is an end to earth , all ready there is alaram of starvation in the world, .
Hence there is only farming remains. and to be remained , no one wants industrialisation in reality.

Hello,
Looking at the ethical degradation of human race, due to the following wrong ways to live the life, i.e. by provoking more own / others wants and unwanted needs, the only happy way to live the human life by integrating with nature is, doing Organic Farming / Natural Farming.
One of the biggest blunder people do is trying to make money by doing farming, they want money to live life similar to life style of people living in cities / working in Industry.
People do not want to live life like people living in villages.
The moment your objective shifts from surviving on farming activity / living your life involving in farming activities to making money from farming activity. its beginning of road down hill.
Agri - Culture is the one of the best option to live content and happy life.

Hi All,
Its nice to see these discussions. I am a software guy with almost 4 years experience. In my view, agriculture has great scope in 2 years. What happened to Petrol/Diesel? We are importing 75% of our consumption. We are not able to control their price and its impact on inflation. When we face a lot difficulties in importing commodity, do u think we can manage to get food for 110 Cr people via imports?
Yeah.. We face labour issues in agriculture. But Its there everywhere. Even in IT, retail sector, Marketing sector, etc... My brother is franchise holder of a famous Sugarcane Juice brand. He has few chains of stores in COimbatore. He is facing labour issues. Even I can see labour openings from Branded Deparmental Stores to local textile vendor. thats not a problem. As long as you do a businees, there will be labour issues. Also, the main spoilsport of farming labour is NREGA and they pay 100 rupees per day. When we were ready to pay 150, the labours were ready to come to my farm. So if you can afford to pay more, you can bring the labourers from urban to rural. You may not afford to pay more now, but you can in future. Let me say why.
Why the pay in urban employees is more?? Foreign, mainly US, companies pay more for IT employees(also to other sectors, but major is IT sector), hence Retail sector developed, followed by real estate, banking sector, textile sector, etc.. hence the demand for urban employees increased... Inflation followed these developments.. If an IT employee gets 20000 in 2007, he would like earn 40000 in 2010 and 1,00,000 in 2014. But Foreign companies wont pay this much of amount and will try to shift their outsourcing to African Countries where they can pay at half rate at which we expect. Also, there will be a saturation point where all american companies got all needed softwares installed and they will be looking for maintainence projects only.. I wont say IT will be down.. Its growth will be less and IT employees will be fired to some extent I believe. So in long term basis, Industralisation will be stagnated and hence, agri is the only field which can give employment at that time. This may take around 10 years and hence I say agri has huge scope in long term basis.
Currently, We dont get good profit. I agree. But lack of profit are due to the following reasons: 1) You spend more on fertilizer and pesticides. 2) Current market prices of agri products are less.
Dont worry. The price of agri products will soon reach the peak in couple of years as the agri production decreases year on year. When the supply is less, demand will be more. One more thing is lack of unity between farmers. When bank employees need pay hike, all bank employees all over India come to road to strike. It happens in all Government Offices, public sector companies like Neyveli Lignite Corporation, state government offices, etcc... Whenever they have any issues, they start striking in unity. Are the farmers doing so? When all Indian farmers promise not to cultivate/sell vegetables for a month, Prime Minister will come to your home and beg you and look into your issues. First thing is We need to form groups and unions in respective districts/states and we need to do everything in unity.
The next thing is.. Some countries have rejected our foods when exported saying this is not consumable. Do u know why? We have been dumping fertilizers and pesticides in lands and spoiled the land, our profit and atlast our life. Have we had any classification of vegetables earlier?? Now we have.. Inorganic, Organic and Natural Vegetables.. I dont blame farmers for this. This is how we were brainwashed in Green Revolution. We needed more production during 70s and we implemented Green Revolution Thats fine as many INdians were starving.. But it wont work anymore as the prolong use of fertilizers/pesticides wont give you more production. I am afraid to eat fruit and veg salads nowadays. Endosulfan is banned in almost all countries. Still we use it. But We can do more production in Natural Farming. Also, Expense is very less and You can sell them for more price. hence you can earn more profit.
To avoid middle men, form a group/union in your taluk and put a shop in the nearby city and sell your products directly. Other option we can expect in future is.. Government may fix some price for each items and get them from farmers directly like whats happening now for rice, wheat, etc..
As long as urban people are there, agriculture will be good. Becos they need good food, need power. Hence Biomass Power are needed.. there is scope for agri products in power sector too.
What farmers can do as of now:
Let the urban heroes eat the chemical feeded vegetables and other agro products and let them suffer from all the diseases including arthithis, diabetes, etc.. at the age of 35. In 3-5 years from now, when every urban cannot do survive the urban food culture and rising global temperature, they wil understand the need of agriculture and come back to agriculture for the sake of his/her health.
Meanwhile, We can do Natural/Organic Farming and enjoy the price and lets live a healthy life. Organic/Natural Farmers fix the price of their products.
Also, Lets be ready with the knowledge and start investing in the tree plantation and all. In 3-5 years, We will be the King.
Lets encourage the chemical farmers to come to organic/natural farming. Dont compel or beg them it they are not interested. Becos, As long as chemical farmers are there, Organic and natural farmers can earn more profit and can rock the world.
As a backup, Please have a side businees apart from agriculture.

@ S.A.ALOK. Thank you for welcoming for a cup of coffee and a rose. But even in a rose there are thorns. .. But surely i wont post that labour problem is solved.. since I am here in this field from nthe last 14 years. Dont think that if IT people come back to agriculture labour problem will be solved! I am not telling that agriculture is not good.. Its the best, so I took up agriculture leaving back my job abroad. But there are many issues. The govt should give a back up for farmers!. A minimum price should be fixed for each and every produce. Eg: Onion was at 150 per kg in the market. But the producer was getting Rs3 per kg!... Agriculture produce is not like delevloping a rose garden!.. Today a farmer is not getting support from any govt dept. everywhere he has to give bribe and this cannot be stopped.
Also i am inviting you to my place not for a cup of tea , but for a beautifull dinner!. Also my land is about 4.5 kms away from the city! There are no busses or vehicle conveyence!

I Wish I am wrong. Because you seem to agree with everyone else, but still you say there is no future. I have only one thing to say to you - you at least own a land for future farming. When labor problem is solved (I am for sure know that it is going to be solved), you can be happy. But what about people like me? I have little land came from ancestry which is just 0.5 acres. What shall I do with that! Still I am hopeful that I can buy some degraded land and somehow get into farming. Let us not lose patience. I can understand the mind of a farmer who is cornered out by everyone. Injustice has be enforced on him while fixing the price, setting the social status etc. But lets be patient. Good days will be for us. And fate of those who have made farmers (real producers in the world) feel inferior - will be taken care by the Nature itself. Let that be clear to us.

Dear Giritharan, you have echo'ed what ever is in my mind. Some people seem to be pre-occupied with past and current problems (either in labor or something else) that they don't see the future. I can understand the mind of a farmer who is cornered out by everyone. Injustice has be enforced on him while fixing the price, setting the social status etc. But lets be patient.
