Dear Readers,

What can the government do to create awareness among the people about the legitimacy of the much-hyped emu farms?

Government should start a slaughter house in each state if possible each district and create awareness of the farming and make them clear of investments and returns.

Emu Farming is the growing industry. Government has to promote emu farming, “R&D should be done to develop a breed of emu birds in India. Agri universities should include emu birds in veterinary studies. There should be a dedicated slaughter house for emu birds. Training should be made available for emu farmers and emu hatcheries, machinery to extract oil out of emu fat should be subsidized, and best quality emu feed should be made available. Government has to encourage the emu farmers by providing interest free loans on emu farming, and subsidies on emu feed ingredients and electricity.

Don’t invest in Emu farms, say Salem authorities
L Saravanan, TNN Apr 21, 2012, 02.26AM IST
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SALEM: Thousands of farmers, lured by private firms, have been queuing up to invest in emu farms in Salem and Erode in the hope of making a quick buck, investing life savings or borrowing money to start a business. But the first signs of a bubble burst were evident at a grievance redressal meeting held in the city on Friday, when farmers complained they were suffering losses and were being cheated.

For the first time, the Salem district administration stepped in to advise farmers not to invest in the emu business. "The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) is yet to complete its research on these birds and whether they make good business," said A Sengottivel, personal assistant (agriculture) to Salem district collector K Maharapushanam.

Almost 100 farmers across Salem district, who attended the meeting held at the Salem collectorate, demanded clarifications from authorities on rearing the birds. They pointed out that advertisements in television channels and newspapers were offering freebies to attract farmers.

A R Shanmugam of Panaimaratupatti, member of the district Agricultural Product Council, said, firms demand Rs 1.5 lakh as deposits from farmers to start a farm and they offer Rs 6,000 per month for three years and a gold coin in return.
"There is little information available about the business, but companies have invested huge amounts in advertisements. The freebies are proving effective. Last week, farmers in Rasipuram waited in long queues to deposit their savings," said K Sundaram of Mallasamudram.

Nearly 250 emu farms have sprung up in Salem and Erode, said Salem regional joint director of animal husbandry P K Balasubramaniam. "We received information that some farmers got returns while some others did not get any profit. Neither the animal husbandry department nor the TANUVAS have encouraged emu farming," he said.

A section of farmers have kept a cautious distance from the scheme. C Vaiapuri of Aragalur said, "Emu fat is being mixed in edible oil. It should be examined by authorities." S Govindarajan of Ammampalayam was of the view that the emu business was not doing well even in Australia, where the bird originated. "Farmers should keep a distance until the government assures profit," he said.

Business Opportunities in Agriculture: 150 Field Interviews (Book)

I have gone through the article, in this article Govt Authority is clearly saying No to the growers. People are using the name of EMU to lure the investors. Emu is not a profitable business it is shown as profitable. So many lucrative schemes are launched by the name of Emu. One of the worst points of story is that the Emu fat is used as food adulteration. One thing is clear if someone is investing too much in advertisement. From where this advertisement money will come ? The Govt Veterinary University has not completed the research and it is not recommending..

Senior cop advices caution against investing in emu business
TNN | Jun 13, 2012, 04.18AM IST

COIMBATORE: Police have warned the public not to be taken in by advertisements that make tall claims regarding emu farming in the region. "Investors should be cautious before entering into emu rearing business. They should not be misguided by advertisement campaign," said Asra Garg, superintendent of police, Tirupur, on Tuesday.

The SP issued a press note and said emu rearing business has been spreading across the Tirupur district. Some of the emu farms have been advertising that those who invest Rs 1.50 lakh in the farms would get Rs 7,000 as revenue every month. Farms have been offering gold coins, incentives, two-wheelers, house hold articles as special prizes to lure investors. Investors are promised that they would also be returned the capital amount of Rs 1.50 lakh after two years.

"Some investors had approached me and complained that they were cheated by some emu farms. So, I wanted to alert the public, who may wish to invest in the emu bird business," said SP Asra Garg.

In Above article one thing is clear. Instead of attracting the farmers toward the profit of EMU they are offering the lucrative scheme. They are offering Gold. Why don’t they give money? These all thing are happening just like a big scam where no one knows what they are doing. Emu farming means only Emu farming and the return means return..... not like house hold, gold, monthly income.

Govt must immediately check that what is the reality ? But what will happen if the schemes are run under the protection of the politicians. ........

Emu Farming is the growing industry and many people are trying their luck in this field. Mr. Inder Pal Singh too have joined the industry with his Haryana Emu Farm, a new addition to his family business of poultry farming.
He talks on various aspects of emu farming in an interview with our correspondent.

Haryana Emu Farm was set up by Mr. Inder Pal Singh in Mukarbpur village in Yamuna Nagar District, Haryana. Before setting up the farm, Mr. Singh visited emu farms in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh to learn about emu farming. He also underwent required training for choosing and rearing genetically strong emu birds.

The company supplies emu chicks, emu birds, emu meat and emu eggs. It mainly targets poultry farmers and consumers of red meat. “There is a huge demand for emu chicks in northern India. Most buyers buy from us to rear emu for breeding purpose only. We are also focusing on emu meat market,” says Mr. Singh. There are 7 employees working on the farm. The company trains its staff in house.

The company participates in agri fairs and events held by sugar mills, co-op banks, agricultural universities or veterinary doctors’ meets, to promote emu farming.

The initial problem faced by Mr. Singh was getting the special emu feed for the different age group, to get the desired medical help from the local vets and marketing the emu eggs. “Marketing of emu product such as eggs and meat are the main challenges for new farmers as there is no ready market in India. I always advice people to study the business and its market first then ask them to step into this business,” he says.

He recommends several measures to the government to promote emu farming, “R&D should be done to develop a breed of emu birds in India, agri universities should include emu birds in veterinary studies, there should be a dedicated slaughter house for emu birds, training should be made available for emu farmers and emu hatcheries, machinery to extract oil out of emu fat should be subsidized, and best quality emu feed should be made available.”

Mr. Singh recommends emu farming as emu birds are highly disease resistant. Also emu meat is 98% fat free.

Future Plans
Speaking about the company’s future plans, Mr. Singh says, “There would be huge demand for emu breeders and emu meat in coming years and for that, we have to increase our production to meet the demand. In future we plan to set up a mini slaughter house for domestic meat supply and thereafter establish an international standard slaughter house equipped with latest cutting & packaging machines for export purposes.” In future, the company also plans to extract and sell emu oil, which has healing and moisturizing properties and can be used to manufacture skin products.

Speaking about competition, Mr. Singh says, “Competition has always been healthy for any business, I always encourage my competitors as we want Emu Industry to grow with time. We need to educate and train prospective farmers first, then supply them healthy birds/feed and last but not the least buy back their eggs to help their business grow.” Mr. Singh is a commerce graduate and has been in the field of sales and marketing since 1998.

So what are your impressions after reading this article? Feel free to ask questions and leave feedback on this article. The editorial team of AgricultureInfomation.com and Mr. Inder Pal Singh will monitor and respond to your comments.
