Hi All,
I have been searching with a possibility of doing a dairy with desi cows( with a good Milk Yield of 8-10 ltrs ). I just wanted to know the general opinion about this. Also, specialist view on this. The need of organic milk has made me to think about Desi cows and of course for ethical reason too.

Has anyone done it successfully?
What are the challenges and issue faced?
and Finally, what do you see the future of this model.

Will Appreciate early response.

Aa I recently found out, Organic milk is not milk which comes from desi cows. The process to make milk organic involves much more. I would suggest you go through it by searching on the internet for organic milk.

Dear Sharad Kumar,

You have a good intention but wrong calculations. Local cows or buffalows shall at the most even after good maintenance in terms of feed shall not give more than two to three litres of milk one time though there may be some exception. If the yield you mentioned is to be met than you have to go for Jersy cows and buffaclows. If you start with local cows, they are aclimatised and sustain the seasonal hazards as compared to Jersy cows and buffalows. I suggest without thinking of yield see, choose the live stock with help of Vet doctor who should accompany you when you go for purchase. As a try start with 5 cows and start purchasing one and half year cow heifers so that they are groomed properly and result achieved.

Thanks

Regards

desi cows

Good initiative. Desi cows like Gir, Sahiwal are known to be good milk yielders and should meet your expetations of 8-10 lit. Also there is Triveni cross bred cow by Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapith.

It is a noble idea which will give disease free and chemical free milk. But readymade milch animals are not readily available. You can procure Thaparkars or Kankrej cows or Gir cows from Rajasthan/Gujarath and improve them with good nmanagement and love.
One Mr. Mukundan is maintaining Tharparkar/Kankrej farm near chengalpat(Near chennai ).
If you struggle well it will not be difficult to get a wet average of 10 Kg. per day.
For furthur complete information Dr. Reddy,

Organic milk

Dear Ms.Deepthi Agrawal,

Appreciate your efforts. How much milk do these cows give you per day and what is the feeding expenses. How do you claim its organic milk? What will you do if the cow suffers from any diseases? Can you please reply as I am interested to know this. Is there any certification agency for organic milk? Do you get extra money for organic milk compared to the milk union milk? Thanks in advance.

Kumar

Native breeds like tharparkar are naturally immune to most diseases as they have evolved in the hot dry arid land. We are carefull about keeping our premises clean. We have luckily had no outbreaks of any kind.
The cows are given no hormones or antibiotics on any regular basis. They are fed feed grown on the farm as much as possible.
We are now developing 100 or so pasture/paddocks and we will soon rotate the cows on these. We are seeding them with Anjan, Dhaman and legume seeds.
I cannot give every detail in a forum. However, you are welcome to come and see our model . It is highly repeatable. We are basically farming the free sunlight and with the help of grass and cows, turning it into high quality milk.

Halo,
Organic dairy farm is not merely indian cattle but it needs a subset of animal husbandry practices along with simultaneous certification programme. However the concept can be apply to high milk volume cattle. First is to clarify your objective and than proceed for breed selection ,followed by Animal Feed system, environment friendly Design and safe and clean milk production.
