Dairy farming plan in Bellary

HI,

I am Chandan working in IT Industry here in Bangalore. I have got an idea of setting up a dairy farming in my native place present in Bellary district. As I am aware of, there are several roadblocks to setup a dairy farming. Could anyone guide me through on this?

I can invest upto 25 lakhs for this idea.

I have below concerns:
1. Will that 25L be enough to open up a small scale dairy farming with around 25-30 cattles?
2. Since bellary is a dry place, how can I manage the fodder throughout the year?
3. How much human resource is required for this setup to be efficient?
4. Is there a milk collection point in Kudligi (which is near to my village) where I can supply the milk?
5. What is the cost split per litre of milk (i.e., how much should the profit per litre of milk?)
6. What other unseen scenarios/risks I should be aware of?

I have below concerns:
1. 30 cattle x 60k is about 1800k for cattle.
2. Proper house management can address bellary's dry and hot climate.
Grow multiple fodder crops to manage the fodder throughout the year for 30 cattle.
3. 2 to 3 human resource is ok.
4. In Kudligi itself KMF dairy is available
You can supply the milk on your own to nearby town.
5. Cost split per liter of milk depends on maintaining Fat & SNF in milk.
Profit per litre of milk depends on management efficiency and productivity.
6. Other unseen scenarios/risks You should be aware is Management.

Please not dairy farming is an ancillary activity like project work in IT company under Agriculture which can be called as Vendors. Success of IT company lies on how they handle with vendors to win the project as well as opportunities to generate income.

Please do not rely onle on dairy and do agriculture for sustainable feature.

Profitable Dairy Farming,

Hi,
I am also some one who is really interested in setting up one .In the process of learning i found to maintain 50 milking cows we need land space of at least 4 hectors of land for growing our own feed else getting feed from out side is not going to work economically .

When its business its business . can't waste 4 hectors of cultivable land for raising 50 cows which in-turn going to give us 500-750 litters of milk at normal condition.

I feel the hydroponics fodder solution works better which is going to only utilize 300 squire feet space and can produce 1000kg of fresh green fodder every day which should be fine for 50 milking cows and all we need is to buy dry grass and concentrate feed and feed along with them . Add azolla a floating fern which resembles algae .
Reason
* Rich in proteins, essential amino acids, vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin B12 and Beta- Carotene), growth promoter intermediaries and minerals like calcium, phosphorous, potassium, ferrous, copper, magnesium
* Dry weight basis, it contains 25 - 35 percent protein, 10 - 15 percent minerals and 7 - 10 percent of amino acids, bio-active substances and bio-polymers
* Livestock easily digest it, owing to its high protein and low lignin content
* Azolla can be mixed with concentrates or can be given directly to livestock
* Can also be fed to poultry, sheep, goats, pigs and rabbits.

best part is it will just cost lest than 50paisa to generate 1kg of them every day. So every 8 squire feet of space will give you 750gms to 1kg every day for 6 months and then again setup the system again,

Now coming back to the business. what is the best way to setup a diary farm?
I am not a professional nor even tried one even not visited any of them. but spent more than 6 months online to just get information for all . Just sharing with you guys.If i am wrong advice me back.

1 acre Land with fencing
5000 square feet shed for cows (50 Numbers)
1000 square feet shed for milking
5 separate 100 square feet shed for medical treatment
1000kg out put hydroponic fodder system (1600000 /-INR)
Store room for dry and concentrate feed and medicines
Bio Gas plant
Earth worm unit
Compost unit
Urine collecting sump
azolla growing area 2000squire feet (50 cows)
Automatic milking unit
water storage
If i have missed any thing pls advice so it shall be useful for all of us.

With this we have only used 10000 square feet of space we can use the balance land for making vertical vegetable garden in some 5000 square feet green house and 10000 squire feet fish pond and used the balance land for cows to take EVENING WALK and may be even some chickens and honey bee .....

Will love to see some feed back and real people with real experience to help us .If what ever i have said is right or wrong and is it possible in reality?.

You are silent on value addition of milk you produced, importantly think again for its utilization. Will you sell it to between Rs.19 to 21/-? or wanted more?

You are right , selling milk is not going to make business more interesting,I think converting that to next level of business by converting into cheese and yogurt.
Is that what you are talking about? i am going through some of your post and advice will be sure of great help, Is there any one who is got experience in hydroponics fodder solution ?

I have got a quote from one company in India which can produce 1000kg of green fodder every day and at cost 2.5 INR per KG, the cost of the unit is 16lakhs and need only 300 squire feet space.

Looking for some advice i can save lots of space .....

Hi

Hydroponics fodder is not a simple process.
There are many factors involved related to kind of water, air and fertilizers. I tried to research once and let it go as initial cost involved is too high for something that is not totally fool proof. Imagine what happens if the fodder gets spoilt, loss of electricity, some issue with the unit, what will you do then? You will have to keep backup with another similar machine, which will cost another 16L.

You can purchase another 4+ acres irrigated land in my area for that price and cultivate more maize or similar.

I feel you should understand the issues involved with hydroponics before getting excited with space savings.

Another point is Rs. 2.5/kg is too high price for fodder. Your dairy will not sustain with such high fodder costs. You should target max. Rs.1 for fodder for dairy to be sustainable as other costs such as concentrates and medical are unavoidable.

As for Azolla, for such a large dairy with 50 cows you need to produce 100 kg everyday considering 2 kg per cow. Yield is 300gms per day per sqm., which means at least 333 m2 area to cultivate Azolla. To maintain so many azolla ponds, its not a simple task. At least 2 person required as manure addition everyday and azolla retrieval is time consuming activity. Its good for small scale.

As for savings in terms of concentrates, 1 kg of azolla provides enough protein as much as 1 kg of pellets which cost around Rs. 13 nowadays. So you work out costs and efforts and then take a decision.

Yes winning market makes difference. Selling product in innovative method will lead to high profits.

Hydroponics is new for Indian system because of cost investment when lands may be available. However it cannot be stopped and trying makes no problem. Important thing is dry food (Hey) is required for cattle for their productivity.

Mr. vertical,

1) you can open out which is the agency or supplier given quote for hydroponics in india. For what are all , he has quoted 16 lakhs. without understanding the details of considerations in 16 lakhs we can't say whether it is cheaper or costlier or genuine. more than that it will be useful to all interested forum members.

2) Narayan has rightly said, it will be cheaper when plety of water resources,land , power and mainly man power is available to cultivate the land next to the dairy farm. But, hydroponics is also have its own advantages n disadvantages for the fodder growing as like in traditional methods too.

3) cost factor , when we compare the tedious in handling the bulk quantity green fodder , laborius,wastages, time factors and nutritions comparisons, I dont think so the difference will not be much in hydroponics produce.

4) yes either we can't depend on only hydroponics or normal agriculture methods to grow for green fodder. that is the trend is going tobe happen for all commercial dairy farms near future in our nation, because of real estate attitude entered to agricultural fields/lands too.

5) last but not least, people who are concerned to hydroponics technoloy can think for a certralised/commercialised/community fodder growing unit to near the cluster of commercial dairy farms. It will be have more advantages mutualy for the unit owner as well as the dairyfarm owners. since the high technology mainternace can be taken care by a dedicated person and they can concentrate n have a beeter controle on quality issues and more than any thing dairy farm farmer/person can be free from such complication, who is already have plenty of commitments and problems.

Any way all these thinks and thoughts are to come out of the problems facing by commercial dairy farms.
