In this forum, I am seeing lot of people making tall claims about Stevia.
If it is so good, why has Stevia not replaces sugar in all households?

Why are people not switching from sugarcane farming to stevia?

I want to understand what is holding back Stevia, what challenges is Stevia facing that is holding it back from being a household used commodity?

If its not used in household instead of sugar, what is done of it, with so many people cultivating it?

I am not chalaneging anyone about Stevia, just trying to understand where it stands compared to sugar, and what future it has.

Please share your thoughts on the same.

Thanks,

Dear Mr. Suhas,

Please understand the following points of stevia in comparison with sugarcane:

1. Stevia is very new plant compared to sugarcane. And to divert the farmer , who is already cultivating sugarcane is not a easy task. Its difficult to change mind set of farmer.

2. Being a plant of specifilized cultivating techniques, cost of cultivation, compared to sugarcane is high.

3. Regarding replacement with sugarcane, it could happen after it is popular between the farmers. But replacement will happen when we will have vast area under cultivation. Because the yield of stevia white powder requires huge quantity of green leaves and ratio of white powder (In ur term houshold commodity) to green leaves is very less.

4. And finally, change doesnt happen overnight. To convince farmer for stevia cultivation requires one example around him to divert him for stevia cultivation.

Hope above clarification suffice your queries.

Niraj

At least do the farmers growing stevia, use it at home in place of sugar?

Is it a very difficult process to get the sweet part of it( what is marketed as the white powder, stevioside etc)?

Can I grow it in my home garden, and use it at home?
