1. First MUNDUSvini BioFach International Organic Wine Award

The wine segment at the World Organic Trade Fair gets another highlight
in 2010 when BioFach and MUNDUSvini/Meininger Verlag organize the first
MUNDUSvini BioFach International Organic Wine Award. The organic wine
world has presented its products in the day-lit hall 4A at BioFach since
2008 and the new wine award will make it even more attractive.
Altogether 318 organic wine exhibitors presented the results of their
wine-making skills to visiting experts in 2009. Some 700 wines are
expected to be entered for the first MUNDUSvini BioFach International
Organic Wine Award in 2010.

2. BioFach Japan starts soon

Only 6,626 ha of land in Japan were farmed by organic methods in 2007,
which corresponds to 0.14 % of the total agricultural area in Japan.
This is shown by the FiBL statistics from organic-world.net. A large
share of organic products must therefore be imported from abroad.
BioFach Japan, which invites the international organic sector to the
capital Tokyo for the ninth time from 7–9 October 2009, is a suitable
get-together for exporting companies and Japanese importers and
wholesalers.

3. Japan: Growing importance of eco-textiles and natural cosmetics

The importance of eco-textiles on the Japanese market is growing. The
non-profit organization Japan Organic Cotton Association, JOCA, which
was founded as long ago as 1990, now has some 150 members and advises,
certifies and issues a relevant label. This was reflected at BioFach
Japan 2008 for the first time with a special display area, Cotton
Street, where 15 companies presented themselves and their products.
Following its successful premiere, the special area enters the second
round in 2009.
Natural cosmetics is presented as another non-food focus in a special
area at BioFach Japan for the second time. Asia with its booming demand
is one of the international dream regions for natural cosmetics firms.
Total sales of certified natural cosmetics in 2008 in Japan alone were
equivalent to about 580 million EUR, which is 4 % of the total Japanese
cosmetics market.

4. IFOAM's campaign for Climate Change Conference

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) will be held in
Copenhagen, Denmark, from 7–18 December 2009. IFOAM will be present at
COP15 and is currently developing a campaign to get the message across
that Organic Agriculture is a mitigating and adapting solution to
climate change as well as to provide governments from developing
countries with advice on mitigation and adaptation strategies. IFOAM in
joint cooperation with the IFOAM EU Group and the support of Hivos will
prepare key advocacy materials, including a compilation of mitigation
case studies, a guide to organic farming and climate change. IFOAM has
applied to the UN to hold a "high sequestration, low emission farming
systems for a food secure world" side event that will encourage
governments to integrate organic farming into their climate change
policies and action plans. (Also see events below.)

5. IFOAM One Earth, Many Hands

The IFOAM Annual Report entitled "One Earth, Many Hands" has just been
published. The report describes the worldwide activities of many member
organizations with practical examples and is illustrated with many
coloured pictures. "At no other time has there been such an opportunity
to make organic principles and systems a beacon for sustainable
development. Agro-ecological agriculture, represented best by organic
principles and systems, is a multifunctional solution to many global
problems that are reaching crisis proportions, including environmental
degradation, hunger, and economic and social injustice," writes IFOAM
President Katherine DiMatteo in her introduction "Leading the World to
Sustainability".

6. Conference on Mediterranean Organic Agriculture and Livestock Farming

The 15th Conference of the Spanish Association for Organic Agriculture
(SEAE) took place in Majorca in mid September and was devoted to
Mediterranean organic agriculture and livestock farming. The aim of this
event was to describe the progress and present situation in the organic
food sector in the Mediterranean region and assess the importance of
organic production (such as growing olives, wine, carobs and almonds,
and livestock production). SEAE manages the secretariat of the IFOAM
AgriBiomediterráneo Group.
The organic farming area on the Balearic Islands increased more than
anywhere else in Spain last year and grew by 16 % to 23,000 ha. The
number of new producers increased by around 100 to reach 563.

7. Organic fraud: Man imprisoned for more than two years

The director of a food company that fraudulently claimed to be supplying
organic products was jailed for 27 months, reports the British Guardian.
The company "One Food Limited" in Northamptonshire, claimed to sell
"organic, natural and ethical" products. The products sold to
supermarket chains contained in reality non-organic ingredients, Trading
Standards officers said. Neil Stansfield, 41, was therefore jailed as he
even got employees to re-bag the products. Two others received lesser
sentences. All three had pleaded guilty.

9. ÖKO-TEST: Organic mascara recommended

Almost every second woman in Germany uses mascara nearly every day to
accentuate the eyes and make them brighter. However, many products
contain critical ingredients such as nitrosamines, as shown in a current
test by the Frankfurt consumer magazine ÖKO-TEST. The test rated four
products as "poor" and "unsatisfactory". Nine products received a test
verdict of "very good" and one product "good". According to ÖKO-TEST,
laboratory tests detected nitrosamines in two mascaras. The magazine
claims these could cause tumours in the liver, kidneys and respiratory
passages. Natural cosmetic products are therefore a safe alternative –
all organic mascaras passed the test with "very good" or "good".
