India – On the way to become a key market for organic products
India’s agriculture is traditionally organic and many farmers have been growing
organic for many generations. Starting in 2001 the Government has developed
the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) proposes to provide an
institutional mechanism for the implementation of National Standards for
Organic Production. NPOP stands for a certification program and national
standards. Furthermore it serves to encourage organic farming and organic
processing throughout the country. The diversity of climate zones enables India
to produce a great variety of agricultural products and cotton in certified quality.
According to ICCOA, by the year 2012 1.5 % of all agricultural acreage in India
is expected to be organic and through its strong organic export programme,
India will hold 2.5 % of the global market. The domestic market is estimated to
reach 15 billion Rupees (approx. 241 million € ).
The fast growing young population in India will lead to a substantial middleclass
with growing income in the large cities being the key growth factor for the
domestic organic consumption in India. The demographic change will lead to
changing consumption patterns and offers excellent market opportunities for
international companies wishing to expand into the organic market in India.
