Agricultural Universities in India are working on models which have been discontinued by the western countries long back, may be 30yrs back. The objective of Agricultural universities, today, is to sell degrees and not uplift Indian Agriculture. Things should change fast before we are forgotten for ever.

Mr. Harsh Majmudar, Deputy Manager- Marketing & Exports says -

Well, it shall not be possible to directly comment on this. Though many universities are tied up with farmer groups and have good infrastructure for agriculture education and sector development, emphasis on research is required, which I guess it being taken up by established universities.

Somewhat I am happy but not totally. Our agriculture universities should take initiations in researching for sustainable agriculture. All the research work is done only in favor of some chemicals and they should have a long term plan.

Indian agriculture universities are extensively engaged in education, research & knowledge dissemination work. For the long term success of Indian agriculture, basic research work from universities and government institutions is essential and one way of ensuring this is universities should explore the opportunities to collaborate with the private players.

Though the agriculture universities are conducting research and field trials, there is a lot of gap between lab and land. Universities and state extension departments can play positive role in this direction.

Mr. Harish Chander Tewari, Director, WWOOF, says-

The agriculture universities are now passing through the hangover of so called Green revolution some universities in states like Karnataka and Maharashtra have started good initiatives in field of Organic farming related research and project. However the Agriculture Universities should start research and develop low cost products related to Bio-fertilizers, Bio-pesticides, Composting techniques, Vermicomposting technologies, Pheromone traps, Release of predators in crop fields, Cow urine, etc.

Dr Jayakumar Singaram - Executive Director - Operations, Light up a Million Villages India Pvt Ltd., says-

No, because our university education system is just like teaching and nothing practical. When the universities are giving technical things to the people they want to show to the higher authority. And they are not concentrating on sustainable projects and they don’t have the follow-up process.

Mr. Munish Kumar, Founder & Managing Partner, Punjab Dairy Farm, says-

Yes, there are certain institutes who are pro-efficient but these are so just because of the few people who lead such organizations. It completely depends on person to person. That is the unfortunate part. We should have a core team to check and monitor the system.

Mr. M.K.Shajath Ali Managing Partner, says-

Absolutely no. I am telling you about this year’s position in Tamil Nadu. Those who did not get the seat for medicine either MBBS or B.VSC, opted for B.Sc- Agri. This year’s students and the parents opted for B.Sc-Agri, because one who scored high in IAS is the one who studied B.Sc Agri. This year’s students who opted for B.Sc Agri wanted to get in to the IAS, I think.
