Mr. P. Damodarasamy, Director Sanjay India Agro Solutions says -

They are not connected to the farmers in a big way. They are not proactive in their approach. They do not understand, analyze, solve the problems and potentials and disseminate the solution proactively. Much of what they do today is only post-mortem of the problems of the farmers, which is not very helpful as it should be. The linkage between the farmers and such Universities are remote and needs to be very much improved. Further these universities also should try to use the local and traditional knowledge about farming techniques, soil, climate, water resources etc. which is highly localized. We understand from agricultural records that our yield in 1750s from an acre was much more than what it is today with all these universities. It is recorded there are so many thousands of strains of rice most of which have gone out of the fields because of neglect of these universities. Probably they have not been able to make any great impact on the farmers because they are trying to ape western agricultural techniques here without indigenizing and improvising them to suit the local needs and traditions. They want to cut the feet to suit the shoes they have made (learned from western books).

Mr. Mukesh Gupta, Exec. Director, Morarka Foundation, Jaipur says-

No, all the agriculture universities should be immediately auctioned to the private sector. In turn private sector should be supported by government to run the university on 5 year term lease or on mutually agreed terms. A lot of improvement is in fact needed in Curriculum, student, Industry Exposure, & quality of Faculty etc. in the present state of universities in India.
The agriculture scientists and faculties in the universities should feel a pressure on them to perform.

I am not sure about that because in universities they may do R&D, but it may not reach farmers.

No, they have to bring down the technology from Lab to Lap through volunteers, private agencies and NGO's. The updated technologies will be disseminated to the farmers with the help of global experts.

Mr. Balaji Krishnappa, Director, Dhanyaa Ventures, says-

In the present day scenario, it is surprising to see universities doing so much for a farmer in spite of all odds. Policy changes with respect agriculture universities are definitely needed, wherein researchers need to be given more power by giving them freedom from babus. Only then we have a future for the farming community. Research has to be autonomous.

Mr.Sakthivel S, Manager Business Development, Rudras Breeders Poultry Farm says-

In poultry I am satisfied with their training programs but agricultural universities have to work on manufacturing equipment for our farmers. This year we are working on making mushrooms from chicken manure with the help of agricultural universities. But still the cost of training is alarmingly high for ordinary farmers.

Mr. Ashish Sharma grows exotic vegetables at his farm. He says –

Not really. No university teaches exotic vegetables and exotic vegetables are being exported from India since the last 15 years when we people did not know about these vegetables. The university needs to teach apart from chemical farming also.

Mr. Satish Belhekar, Founder member, Managing Director, Shree Consultants, Pune. Direct - Flora Biotech, Pune, Managing Director says-

Obviously no. They can do much more that they are doing presently. A graduate who passed out from any university does not have any practical knowledge about agriculture. That means they are way back than the present situation of the agriculture. They can & must link their curriculum with the present agricultural situation so as to create a farmer of new generation who can at least increase the productivity along with quality.

Mr. Srinivas Kavuri, Chief Consultant, VSR Consultants says-

Sorry to say NO. The Research activities undertaken by Indian Agricultural universities are reducing over a period of time, with the entry of Corporates. Due to this, the research benefits are going into the hands of capitalists which they will naturally be using for their profit and the farmers at large are not getting benefited. Universities, though having extension departments, have almost become defunct and the same can be known from the data of new varieties of seeds, pesticides developed by them. There is much to improve.

Mr. S.Gopakumar, Founder Director, Mark Green Warren Estates says-

With the vast healthy agriculture resource am sure India needs to have more independent agricultural universities offering courses in English and regional languages something similar to that in Australia and Canada. By this way more farming and agricultural based jobs can be created with technology in the forefront.
