Agarwood, not agar agar comes from Agarwood tree
Mr Shantaraman
Agarwood forms inside the heartwood of Aquilaria species when infected by a fungus Phaeoacremonium parasitica.Agarwood tree can be artificially infected.
Aquilaria malaccensis(A. agallocha and A. secundaria are synonyms for A. malaccensis) is found in Assam and its adjoining states. It is not grown wild in Tamilnadu or any other state in South India.
The seeds are not viable for germination. The seedlings found beneath the trees are collected and planted in soil inside polybags.
A nursery at Silchar has collected such seedlings and it can be contacted for Agarwood seedlings in polybags. This nursery had supplied some seedlings in bare root form to various places in India by DTDC but most of them died. Therefore these seedlings in polybags can be supplied only by air from silchar airport to these airports with direct flights from silchar:Guwahati/Kolkata/New Delhi/Chennai/Bangalore.
