Mr. Raj Kacheria of Raj Shri Farms talks about Acacia Mangium, Timber Tree.

The native habitat of A. Mangium is the tropical of rainforest of Queensland, Australia, Papua New Guinea and some island of Indonesia. Acacia mangium has been introduced in Masbate (Mobo), Leyte (Maasin), Davao (Sto. Thomas), Malaybalay (Maunpali), Bohol (Bilas), Zamboanga (Paonanca), Surigao del Sur (Bislig) and in Bataan.

Have a latitudinal range from 19 S to 24 N and a longitudinal range from 88 to 146 E. Acacia mangium is a low-elevation species associated with rain forest margins and disturbed, well-drained acid soils (pH 4.5-6.5). Altitudinal range is from sea level to about 100 meters, with an upper limit of 780 meters. It is typically fond in the humid, tropical lowland climatic zone characterized by a short dry season and a mean annual rainfall between 1446 and 2970-mm. Acacia mangium can tolerate a minimum annual rainfall of 1000 mm. Mean monthly temperature range from a low of 13-21C and a high of 25-32 C. Though considered an evergreen species, A. mangium does not grow continuously throughout the year. Growth seems to slow or cease in response to the combination of low rainfall and cool temperatures. Dieback occurs during prolonged frost (5-6 C).

Comparing to other tree species like pine and eucalyptus, Acacia is preferable to the farmers, because it is a legume fixing around 40 kg of nitrate/per hectare per year, thus enriching the soil.
Best suited to high rainfall areas and dead soils.
Native range : Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, eastern Indonesia.

Presence : In Micronesia and American Samoa: American Samoa (cultivated, uncommon) (Tutuila, Ofu), Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), Federated States of Micronesia (Chuuk (Weno), Pohnpei), Guam.
Elsewhere: Sabah. Reported as invasive in Sabah and Africa (Cronk and Fuller, 1995).
Queensland, Australia, New Guninea and Molucca Islands of Indonesia planted in Sabah, Malaysia

Annual rainfall from 1,000-4000 mm; temperature from 12-34 C; 0-600m altitude. Thrives well in eroded rocky, then mineral soil and alluvial soils. Tolerates some water logging. pH from 4.5-8.0.
Mangium, which originates from tropical Australia, is one of the most common forest plantation trees found in S. E. Asia. To date a total of 1,50,000 hectares have been planted worldwide.
Maximum Temperature - 45 C
Minimum Temperature - 5C

It does not withstand heavy frost. But can survive light frost. It grows best in full sunlight. In shade it remains stunted and spindly. A native of Australia, Mangium is today the most sought after reforestation tree throughout the world and in South East Asia in particular. The amazing success in India conditions has made Mangium the most popular plantation tree today.

Under irrigated conditions Mangium can be grown almost in any part of the world. Mangium can withstand a maximum temperature of 45-degree Celsius (113 F) and a minimum temperature of 5-degree Celsius. However it thrives best in temperatures ranging from 34 degree Celsius to 20 degree Celsius making it an ideal plantation tree for a tropical country like ours.

Distribution :. IT grows typically below 300 feet elevation, but can occur upped 2,000 feet. Mangium is a pioneer species, colonizing disturbed sites, such as field margins railroad tracks and areas scarred by fire. It can be found naturally in wet sites on the edges of stands of melalueca or mangroves and in grasslands and along streams and rivers.

Uses of Acacia Mangium

Because of its density and calorific value (4800-4900 kcal/kg), the wood makes a good fuel. It could also be utilized for post, if treated. Raw material for pulpwood, plywood and particleboard manufacture.
Woodwork; light building; firewood; pulp; particleboard; leaves as forage; fruit – manufacture of linoleum, printing and stamping ink; rubber substitutes.

Mangium wood makes attractive furniture and cabinets, doorframes, window parts, molding and sliced veneer. It is also employed as a light building timber for uses such as framing and weather boarding (NAS 1983). Furniture, cabinets, handles of sporting goods, boxes, crates, door frames, window parts, moldings, veneers, light construction, fuel, particle board and pulp.

Comparing to other tree species like pine and eucalyptus, Acacia is preferable to the farmers, because it is a legume fixing around 40 kg of nitrate/per hectare per year, thus enriching the soil. Regarded first as a rather productive timber tree secondly for firewood (specific gravity = 0.65). The hard, light-brown wood is dense, with narrow sapwood and a straight, close grain. It makes excellent particleboard and could possibly be useful for furniture, cabinetmaking, and perhaps even pulp and paper. Capable of being directly sown, the tree appears quite promising for erosion control where adapted (NAS, 1979).

Mangium wood makes attractive furniture and cabinets and sliced veneer. I sis a;sp employed as a light-duty building timber for uses such as framing and weathering-boarding.
