Hi everyone,

My name is Daria, I’m 20 years old, and I’m from Transnistria (a small region in Eastern Europe). I've been dreaming of starting a small farm and contributing to the revival of rural life in my area. I grew up in the countryside, have a deep love for the land, and a strong respect for the hard work that goes into farming.

Right now, I don’t have much experience or equipment, but I do have a lot of motivation and a willingness to learn and work hard. I want to start small — maybe growing vegetables, herbs, or orchard crops that are suited to our local climate. Over time, I hope to expand, share knowledge with others, and inspire young people to reconnect with agriculture.

I'm reaching out here in hopes of getting some guidance from experienced farmers:

  • What would you recommend for someone just starting out?
  • Which crops are easiest and most practical to grow for beginners?
  • What basic tools or equipment do I need to get started?
  • Are there affordable or second-hand resources you'd suggest looking into?
  • Has anyone here started from scratch and wouldn’t mind sharing their story?

Any advice, recommendations, or encouragement would mean a lot. I’m really hoping to connect with others who’ve walked this path.

Thank you in advance!

Warm regards,

This is amazing. I would recommend two things initially:
1. Look at what is growing in your immediate neighbourhood. That will set the tone for what you would like to grow and see what goes into it to grow these crops
2. I would recommend you do a soil testing report. This will give you a direction. Also based on weather conditions you could choose a crop
As far as farming tools and equipment is concerned, i would say used tools if in good condition will serve you well and also be inexpensive.
Good luck with your enterprise.
