Natural remedies for Red Ants (Fire Ants)

Red ants otherwise known as fire ants for their painful bite, live on ground. They spoil plants by eating some roots, putting up amphids on roots an shoots. The traditional pesticide is DDT which I don't want ot use. What are the natural / organic remedy to stop the ant problem?
