Hello,
We have farms in our village. It is clay soil and we also do not have any irregation facility since our village is near to sea shore and the ground water is salty. We can do agriculature only when they open Mattur dame for irregation. In this condition what kind crop can we grow. Please suggest.

Clay soil crops

Hi,

First you need to check the present status of your soil in terms of pH, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S. Since the soil is clay soil, you can add more of organic matter and gypsum. Gypsum helps flocculate clays in acid and alkaline soil. Some other benefits of adding gypsum to the soil are; it also adds calcium to the soil. Gypsum prevents the soil from forming a hard crust on the top so the seeds can emerge, it improves low-solute irrigation water, improves compacted soil in a number of ways. You can grow vegetables like cabbage, kale and other leafy veg., you can also grow paddy through SRI technique (since irrigation water is not available), you can grow potato, Potatoes prefer well-drained soil, which clay is not, so add an inch-thick layer of compost to the soil after planting the potatoes, grow beetroot, onion etc.

Hi murugaiyan,

In clay soil, cotton grows well. You can contact your districts KVK and they will help.
