Hello

I am developing a agriculture farm near Madurai, Tamil Nadu and we are planning for mango plantation, which we will commence next year. In the meanwhile we are interested in the cultivation of short term crops - 4 to 6 months. Our locality receives heavy rains during the North East Monsoons between Mid October to Early December, but we have a sandy soil and we do not water stagnation in the soil

I am interested in cultivating either field crops or vegetables or medicinal plants that are of 4 to 6 months duration and can be grown during heavy monsoons. I would like to seek the feedback from the participants in this forum on field crops or vegetables or medicinal plants that can be planted during heavy monsoons and young crops / plants that can withstand the monsoons

Your advice will be appreciated

Thanks

Dear Srini,

The only crop that withstands water stagnation is paddy. But, in case of failure of north east monsoon, you need to water paddy. Do you have bore wells to supply water, in case of monsoon failure? Then you can think of paddy varieties of 4-6 months.

If you need advice on paddy, send me a PM with your contact details.

Note: If you have free EB connection for your well, paddy can be watered free of charge. If you grow vegetable, you cannot use free electricity to pump water from wells.
