India produces Indian basil in sizeable quantity (250-300tones annually). The demand for Indian basil (Ocimum basilicum) oil is increasing day by day because the major constituent of oil ie methl chavicol is converted in to anethol. Anethol finds uses in large number of products as flavoring ingridient.I t can be cultivated in varied agroclimatic zones as summer as well as rainy season crop.Hot and humid conditions are best suited for its cultivation.However, under low humidity conditions also its growth good provided temperature is around 35 degree.Its 75 days short duration crop, yield 40-60 kg oil/acre. Present rate Rs.550/kg.This year rates are higher due to less production.
