Mr. Verghese Tharakan is an organic farmer and winner of ‘Shony Mitra’ award for soil and water conservation. Unlike normal varieties of jackfruit trees, Mr. Tharakan’s Ayurjack gives fruits throughout the year. With his simple technique of rainwater harvesting, Mr. Tharakan ensured water security not only for his plantation, but also for the 35-odd households around it. His farm was the first in India to be selected for WAFA (Water Air Food ) award, headquarters Denmark. Australia’s Adelaide University Chief Dr. Georgina Deu visited his farm for research. In year 2000, London School of Economics studied his method of irrigation. BBC Chief reporter Helen Palmer visited his farm for studying his techniques.
